Just want to put this out there for newer shooters and hunters. If ur looking for a rifle with low recoil and great ballistics seriously look into the .270 . I hunt deer and moose with a 150 gr and no animal has survived being hit. To compare ballistics check out Winchester ballistics calculator. Its a great tool to help newer shooters to understand trajectory and proper sighting in distances...

But if you are not sure and all those caliber being close, the 308 should be your choice for one reason, you never have a 308 that is not extremely accurate... JP.

I have a 308 as well as a 30-06. My 308 is a Savage 99c and I load 150gr for it. The 30-06 is loaded a fair bit hotter with 180gr Accubonds. Main hunting stuff. Between those, a 12ga and a 22 if it hops or flies its dinner. Big or small I will eat them all.

I have one of each. A Browning FN Safari in 30-06 that was my grandfather's. A 7600 in .308 that i've shot my first moose and deer with, and a 700 in 7mm-08. When I decide between them it is never a question of "what cartridge best suits my needs today" but rather which gun do I feel like carrying.

I've had a couple that wouldn't shoot 2" at 50yds. But if your interpretation is that is very accurate......:D

I like all three but my favorite of the classics will always be the .270. Low recoil, flat, consistently easy to reload for (almost boring actually, Win Brass, 60gr H4831, 130gr anything, LR or LRM primer=1MOA or better), and you always seem to have to drag something to the truck if you do your job.
The .308 and the 30-06 are fantastic for anything in North America also.

Depend i have 2 old 742 308 that shoot 2 inchs at a 100 metres with good reloads but out of the 9 bolts action i own one inch with commercial ammo is the norm and with handload all can shoot sub moa, even my norinco m-305 with handloads if i do my part will give 1.5 inch at a 100 metres... JP.

Compare all three with Winchesters Ballistics calculator if you don't handload.

Use same bullet types and classic weights for the game you want to hunt.

Note the difference, or lackthereof, of all three out to 500yds, in terminal energy, velocity, drop and wind drift with a nominal 200yd zero.

The comparison after that is preference( .270 Jack's Eureka cartridge, the ought six is a masterpiece, or the .308WIN does it all), action type, etc and thus ends up like this............d:h:

I've killed deer with 250-3000, 25-06, 6.5x55, 6.5-06, .270, .280, .308, 30-06, 7 RM, 7 WSM, and 308 Norma Mag.

Out to 250 yards, there's nothing to tell between them. Any differences could be attributed to shot placement or bullet construction. Hit'em in the boiler room, and they go down hard.

For the new shooters out there, I'd just say, pick a gun that feels comfortable and practice with it. The cartridge used is not so important.

good point huntingun!! comfort is the key . The reason i started this thread is . picture this brand new hunter buying his first gun for moose . hes about 6 ft 150lbs.. the guy selling him the gun is giving him all the great info he needs to make an educated choice. 300 win mag with a leoupold 3x9x40 vxII is what he leaves with because a friend had told him that was the gun to buy. I can foresee a black eye and a sale on such gun!!

In canada if you dont hunt the bigs bears nobody need a 300 mag, for the pleasure fine but hunting wise it wont do more except bruise your shoulder... JP.

pick the biggest caliber the store your buying from regradeless of the fit. as long as it will blow thro a fence post and shatter a rock and keep going and kill the muskrat you are good to go

That only holds true if it's chambered in a TC Icon topped by a Redfield Revolution, right?

Not everyone bruises so easily....... ;)

Actually the TC Icon P.H. got upgraded permenantly to the S&B 5X25X56 11LP from one of my TRG i thought it deserve it... The Redfield went on my grandson Axis 243 a nice upgrade to the crappy Bushnell supplied with the Axis combo... JP.
