.270-.308 Winchester

Bill Leeper did one up for me and I couldn't be happier.
Its a Rem 700 Ti with a Shilen barrel, originally a 260 but the barrel was NFG out of the box with an eccentric chamber and rippled rifling.
Because of a lack of load info all testing has been trial and error, but I now have over 150 rds. thru it and it just keeps shooting better.
Several loads tried are sub-MOA with bullet weights from 160 on down with 140 gr. being the best.
The rifle itself as a 260 weighed 5 lb. 14 0z. with Talley rings and a Leupold Ultralight scope on top.
The Shilen barrel is slighty heavier so it now weighs 6 lb. 5 oz. field ready.
Bill also tweaked the bedding and trigger, all in all a very satisfying job and it is a dream to carry.
Unfortunately I cannot give any chronograph results having not done any.

Kevan --I had a browning lever done at my local gunsmith in northern Ontario ,I really like the rifle and caliber but have had very limited success with load development,I just yesterday got it down to about 1.3 in. at 100 yds and am leaving it like that for this hunting season(2 weeks away) I have had a lot trouble getting to this point as there is not much data out there but I have a book on wildcats and got some info there ,I'm shooting 130 g. sst over 45. 4 g imr 4350 at 2.800 OAL,I am necking down win and rem brass(not much difference) and am using wlr primers.I had no success with sierra 130 sbt. Good luck --Montrock(John) I forgot my speeds were around 2900 with 46 g but never checked with 45.4g

Has anyone here necked down a .308 Winchester to .277? How were the results?

It is almost as good as a 7mm-08... with a bullet diameter 7 thou less there isn't going to be any noticeable difference other than not being able to buy ammunition.

I think the .270 redding is slightly different, being a .243 necked up to .277. Body taper and shoulder angle apparently give it a bit more case capacity than a .308 necked down to .277.

Are guys building this wildcat to get around caliber restrictions in Ontario? While it does sound like a bit of a neat little cartridge, I'm not sure if a fellow would gain anything over the "old" .308 win in terms of bringing down game...

That's just crazy talk. What next - the .280 Rem isn't better than the .270 Win?

:)

Its interesting but other than having something different or needing to use up a hoard of 277 bullets and 308 cases i dont' see the point....Of course being a gunnut pretty much garantees that we will own guns which arent always pratical, not duplicated or sane....I still own a few of those.:)

And yes 270 over 280 everytime.

Because of the fact that I currently have 3 270 Win. rifles, you are absolutely right..... I do have a huge hoard of 270 bullets, thousands in fact.
As for why a 270/08 ??......why not ?
The biggest single question I get asked is... Why not a 7/08 instead ?
Its a matter of " To each their own " :)

my reply to that is because I can-then I tell them they don't have one and then I show them that ###y little 270 short action cartridge --I do have a 270 BAR anyways but this is just different. By the way mine is based on info from a fellow named Jack Huber found in a copy of Wildcat Cartridges combo edition and I took a new 308 BLR and rebarrelled it ,I not sure what kind of barrel or any other details except I neck down standard 308 brass with a rcbs die. regards Montrock (John)

I'm a .260 Rem fan myself but I would totally do a .270-08 in a light bolt action rifle.

A 260 was my original purchase as posted, but after putting over 150 rds. downrange with a best 3 shot group of over 2 inches, I thought it was time to let a professional give the gun a thorough examination and am glad I did...

I like your style.:D

Not meaning to derail this fine thread, but my original dream when buying the 260 TI was to go sheep hunting and I still could with the 270-08.
However, the only problem is I have enough trouble dragging my 64 year old butt over a couple deadfall never mind trying to climb mountains and chase sheep ! :(
