Hey guys I'm going to be starting load work up with my 270. Right now I can only get 140 grain bullets for reloading. I plan on loading to the high side of the load data, working my way up gradually. Will a 140 grain bullet be adequate for taking an Ontario moose? Range will be under 300 yards. Or should I wait until I get my hands on some 150's? Thanks
Jesse

I used cheap store bought 140 and 150 grain for years without issue on moose here in BC. I don't remember ever seeing a difference, moose died.

I think you'll be fine, especially if you use a good bullet.

I am also curious about the. 277 bullet. I use a 6.8 spc and shoot a Speer 130 grain at 2700 fps for deer. Shot a small doe at 325 yards last season and it dropped where it stood. I'm wondering what range that load would work on Moose? Never hunted Moose before, but will be this fall

Didn't mean to hijack your thread but I think we're. After similar feedback.

.270 Winchester and 140 grain bullets is a reasonable choice. I'm not a big fan of the SST bullets, they seem a touch fragile, but if you stick to broadside shots I'm sure they would be fine. The 2 most spectacularly quick moose collapses I have been able to witness both came from the .270 Win, one with a 130 grain partition and the other was a 150 grain either corelockt or power point.

The 6.8, I don't have any personal experience with but I would choose the toughest bullet it shot well and keep shots close.

In a 270 for moose I'd use a Nosler Partition or Barnes TSX/TTSX and not expect any problems at all. The C&C bullets will work fine, but I'd save them for deer.

SST's are too fragile for my likes.........The Accu-Bonds I've recovered several have held together after 40 " moose/elk penetration including bone............Harold

Well I bought a ox of 100 sst in 140 grain. Figure I will see how they shoot for me. I will have shot all of them long e fore moose season. What are some others I should try before I decide on my bullet combo. Thanks guys
Jesse

My favourite moose bullets are accubonds and partitions but I find myself using more and more hornady spire point interlocks as I try them.
Nearly the same performance for less than half the cost.

Hard to argue against the Nosler Partition, in my opinion, whatever weight you decide.
After that I am not sure, many of my favorite projectiles have been suspended or discontinued by their manufacturers. I don't know what you have available locally.

Partition, accubond, TSX, TTSX, ... all the expensive ones will do the job, and the argument is of course, why take a chance on an "cheap" bullet when you consider the all the other costs that go into the hunt. On the other hand, the Hornady Interlock can do the job as well. I usually get swayed by the arguments for a "premium", but one of my long time geezer hunting buddies has loaded the Interlock pretty much exclusively for a lot of years now, with nary a problem ... accurate and deadly.
