Work was slow today so I was surfing, found a company making some 165 and175gr. VLD's right here in Canada. These Matrix bullets look to have a good BC and would make a great long range bullet for a .277 cal.
I think it would be nice to run these at about 3000fps, so started thinking of suitable cartridges, maybe 270WSM or 270AI. Am I on the right track with these two or is there a better choice? Idle hands costs more cash!

There's a post about these further down the page... Lots of buzz for 270 calibre fans around these, guns are probably being built to accommodate them for the upcoming shooting season. I think a 270x284win would give the speed and *slightly* better barrel life than a 6.5x284 for an F-class rig. A 270x300WM
or 300WSM would do some good long range deer hammering round with the right barrel/powder combo.

I am building a 6.8mm (270) - 284 to capitalize on these awessome bullets. I don't want 3000 fps becase it will only produce huge throat wear for the gain of minimal advantage ballistically.

If these can be launched at a sedate 2800 fps, they will still kick the crap out of the berger 180mm VLD's and they will certainly exceed the 6.5-284 for barrel wear. BR shooters rate the BC at .700 for 1000 yard shooting!!!!

I am like a little kid at christmas.... waiting for my 270 barrel in an 8 twist to arrive.

I ordered 100 165gr .277 VLD bullets this weekend. They should work perfectly in 1 in 10 inch barrel twist (at 5C and higher !) and are (in theory at least) better than 180gr .284 VLD bullets...
Can't wait to shoot them,
Alex

how many rounds could be expected running at 3000fps?

I don't think that 270WSM can push 165gr at 3000fps without overpressure but 2900fps should be doable. (160gr Nosler Partition can reach 3000fps)

I would be shocked if it couldn't do 3000 with a 165, but it is all specualtion at this point.

Barrel life at 3000 fps... well according to its overbore index if used with a 270 WSM (OBI of 1310) It's barrel life will be extremely poor. Worse than a 6.5-284, which has an OBI of only 1205. And a maximum accurate barrel life of 1000 rounds or less.

It is also worse than a 7WSM with an OBI of 1279 with an accurate life of 750-1000 rounds MAX.

It is reasonable to extrapolate that it's ACCURATE life will be in the neighbourhood of 500-750 rounds. I suspect much less than that if pushed hard.

I have personally never had the best accuracy pushing the piss out of a target bullet anyway. I like to slow them down and find out where they are most accurate.

Do you think a 270ai or a 270-308ai, or similar sized cartridge, have enough capacity to drive the 175's at 2800fps and get decent barrel life?

It seems only 308 Win is decent these days ;)
Seriously, I had the choice between a 7mm-08 Rem and a 270 WSM and chose the 270 WSM. Now I'm getting buyer's remorse but still think that it will be a great long range rifle if only for 1000-1500 rounds.

Marshall has just built a 6.8-08 and a 6.8-06 has existed for decades... its called a 270 Winchester. No reason you couldn't use the venerable 270 as the basis for these bullets, its just the twist you may need to worry about.

Good point, personally my interest in .277 comes from 3 sources:
1) My hunting buddies are devoted to 270 Win (not a good reason but still a reason),
2) 270 WSM sells while 7 WSM doesn't (because 7 Rem Mag is so great),
3) 6.8 SPC is a great cartridge.

There's a huge pent up demand for new 270 cartridges since the invention of 270 Win in 1925 ;)
