I have a .270 Tikka T3 Lite and was wondering if anyone has any Ammo suggestions that work well out beyond 500 meters. I have so far used 130gr. Hornady American Whitetail, 150gr. Federal Fusion and 140gr. Superformance all with satisfactory results to 500 meters and have made a few shots out to the 600 meter mark with the Whitetail but I think because of the low velocity (chronographed 2895fps) and low B.C. (.409) that this is probably its outer limits. The Superformance is smoking at 3038fps but also has my biggest groupings at 100 meters and measuring just under 1.5 inches. I am thinking it has reached its useful range at 500 meters. Maybe 600. The Whitetail and Fusion groups under 1moa at 100 meters. The Fusion chronograph at 2758fps .The only bullets that come close to advertised velocities are the Superformance which is 3090fps and taking in to account the 22.43" barrel is bang on the 52fps that I subtracted from advertised velocity before I purchased my chronograph last week.
Before anyone freaks out on me. I DO NOT HUNT.......I'm only hunting steel and paper!!!!
I welcome any good suggestions.
Perhaps someone could suggest a good long range factory load for my 11 year olds .223 Tikka T3 with a 1:8 twist. He hits 80% on a good day at 500 meters with 55gr. American Eagle but we are looking at increasing his odds. :)
We have had these 2 rifles since June and have 160 rounds through the .270 and 340 rounds through the .223. He gets to shoot more than I do....lol

I took your advice and ordered a brand new Quarter Minute Magnum in 6.5-284 and now I have to sell my HD Ultra Limited........lol

That was a bit impulsive. For paper and gongs, a 270 with most bullets available won't be worse than a 308win in the common 168gr match round for achieving distance. Accuracy of course depends on load, rifle and shooter but your 270 is fine. Try whatever is available for it or reload. A good long distance load might start with a 140 or 150gr Hornady SST and h4831 powder. Unfortunately the 270 is ignored as a poyential match round by manufacturers... It is a very capable round. Try the offerings of PRVI and Sellier & Bellot in your rifle. You'll eventually start pondering handloading... 270 has more options when handloading enters the picture.

Hey New Camper.
Thanks for the reply. For now I am looking for a good factory load as I am not ready to hand load just yet and when I do I think the Nosler Accubond LR might just be the ticket with an advertised B.C. of .625 in 150 gr. I will most certainly give the PRVI???? and Sellier & Bellot a look. I know nothing of either. I am thinking of trying the Superformance in 130gr. but it is more than the 140gr. and I am afraid it might like it....lol
I believed that brapjack was only kidding about selling it all. I have no intentions of getting rid of the Tikka .270. I have shot several 3 shot rounds a 100 meters and 100 yards measuring less than 1moa and had one at .297 and another at .330 so I think I have a shooter. It seems to like cheap ammo! Just need something to get out past 500.
Thanks again

On the T3 varmint 223 I find the federal red box 55gr to be a touch over moa.I'm right around 3" at 300 and 4" at 400.Im about 1/2 moa with the Hornaday match 75gr but its about 2.5x more $$$.Thats with the 1-8 twist.
The black box stuff is crapola practice junk.

I'm not sure if he was kidding, but I'm glad you caught my ribbing (I don't like typing on any phone as it is slow so I cut corners). He is correct in suggesting a 6.5 cal though... More match bullets available in that caliber than the almost exclusive selection of hunting for 277. PRVI is a Serbian manufacturer if memory serves: S&B is Czech. I've had good results with the latter, hear nothing but good reviews on the former and both are less expensive but no less quality. Far as I am aware, Matrix bullets in BC is the only maker of vld bullets in 277... When you meander down the handloading path...

I took your advice and grabbed a couple of boxes of the 75gr. Hornady Match. This sounds like the ticket to getting out over 500 meters with the diminutive .223 or at least increasing hit ratio at 500 meters. I was holding off because of the price but if we can get under a moa then we may be able to increase his chance to bang the 600 meter gong and then who knows........
My 11 year old shot a 1.375" and 1.327" three shot groups at 100 yds with American Eagle 55gr.
Thanks
