I have a friend who is going to purchase a Remington 770 or 710 as a starter rifle. She has is narrowed down to a 270. or a 30-06.

Which do you think is better for a 5'2" female who is just getting into hunting. She'll be hunting deer and the odd moose.
Thanks everyone.

Which one

Hi, depends on the size of the Lady, and past shooting experience.
But the 270, or 7-08 would be a great choice, very little recoil, and will take
Deer, or Moose. Just make sure which ever one you get it's got a good recoil pad. Of course, practice, practice and more practice, until she's comfortable shooting the gun.

Honestly? Neither chamberings are a good choice for a beginner, and it's a bad choice for a rifle.

If it were my 5'2" woman friend, I would urge her to look at a Tikka T3 or Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 or 6.5x55.

The '06 has pretty substantial recoil, and the .270 makes a hell of a lot of noise. Neither are good choices for a beginner.

The Remington 770 and 710 are pieces of crap. If cost is the #1 issue, the Stevens 200 is in the same ballpark and the bolt handle is much less likely to fall right off when you're using it.

The 7mm-08 and 6.5x55 are perfect deer cartridges, and while I wouldn't use either on a moose, I also wouldn't hesitate to use them on the biggest mule deer or black bear.

Don't let her scope it with anything worse than a Bushnell 3200. Bad glass can really hurt a beginner's experience at the range.

Non-optimal choice all around, ACandian. The .30-30 is a great deer killer, modest recoil, and comes in wonderful hunting rifles. .243 is also low recoil and will help her to learn to shoot well without getting recoil-shy; she'll be able to place the bullet where it needs to be. 6.5 Swede, .260 Rem are also better choices than .270/.30-06 for her needs.

For a lady, I would Say 6.5x55. Lookup Tradeex, he still have some decent Swede Mausers for cheap.

I would have no problems using a properly loaded 6.5 on anything up to Moose.

I wouldn't have said it any better myself. For cryin' out load, if you can at least talk her out of the 710 or 770, at least you'll have done her one good deed. My daughter uses a Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 scoped with a Burris Fullfield II. Very nice little rig considering price.

When you say "starter rifle" do you mean first rifle - as in she has never shot before?

Ger her started using a 22 until she is comfortable handling a rifle and a more proficient shooter. Then, ramp-up to the centerfire making sure the LOP (length of pull) suits her size. My wife is 5'2" and a Youth gun is much more suitable for her. Any full size rifle will be too big - for sure.

I agree with the 7-08 or 6.5 options too - a 270 or 30-06 is going to be nasty in recoil. Some grown men shy away from the 30-06 as it's more recoil than they can handle... Depending on what and where she is hunting, a 243 might be OK too - lots of ladies use them. 30-30 is a good choice too! Spare her some grief and suggest a milder cartridge.

Good luck - SD

Another vote for a Stevens in 7mm-08.Mild recoil, and should do you good on deer and moose.
If she is of smaller stature you might want to look at a youth rifle with a shorter barrel and lenght of pull.

x2 Anthony at TradeEx is an honest dealer (CGN site sponsor). I put a sweet Swedish 6.5x55 hunting rifle on hold today as a matter of fact.

I just don't like most of the modern stuff in my price range - plastic, stainless don't do it for me. The Tikka T3 is a decent rifle if you can get over the looks and don't mind a push feed action. The Tikka T3 Deluxe is nicer looking but give me a late model Husqvarna any day.

If she can handle the .30-06 (actually used one and got it to group well without flinching), then there is your choice for deer and moose! If she can't (and hasn't), then as mentioned start smaller.

Nothing wrong with a used M70 Featherweight in .270Win. for a starter rifle. Cut the stock to fit with a Pachmayer decelerater pad installed, mount a simple 6x Leupold M8, use reduced loads and you're set :) A friend of mine started with a Rem 788 in .308 and dumped her first moose a couple years ago. She loves shooting that little rifle and does well with it.

for a woman wanting to hunt deer and moose, I would suggest a Remington Model Seven youth in 7-08. They are light and short, have a good recoil pad on them, and accurate.

Remington just came out with a new low recoil load for the 7-08 too, with a 140 grain cor lokt @ 2300 fps. It provides 200 yards of power/trajectory for deer sized game with super low recoil (8 ft lbs of recoil in 7.5 lb rifle) For moose, a 140 grain Accubond or Partition loaded by Federal @ 2800 fps would be good out to 200-250 yards. Recoil energy would be still mild @ 15 ft lbs
