.270 or .30/06?

I'm looking for a new rifle (probably a ruger american standard) for deer and bear hunting in the maritimes. Anyone care to weigh in on which calibre is "better"? I don't see much difference between the .270 and the .30/06 both seem to be good calibres.

You're right, there isn't much difference. The .30-06 gives you the option of using heavier bullets and the .270 has a slight long range advantage. The animals you want to hunt will not notice the difference.

(PS- This is one of those debates that has been done to death so you may receive some flak for posting this question. Best of luck!)

A lot of people think that Jack O'Connor (a hunting and shooting writer and editor of some renown) was extremely partial to the .270.

But here is a sort of quote from one of his books on guns and hunting.

"There is quite a lot of debate these days as to which is a better hunting round, the .270 or the 30/06. I presently have three rifles in each cartridge. That pretty well tells you where I stand."

Both are excellent calibers. The 30-06 gives you a wider range of bullet weights. I like the .270 myself and just use the 130 gr Sierra Boattail for everything.

30/06 will do anything the .270 will, plus it has a wider selection of bullet styles in factory ammo, found most anywhere.
.270 has lighter recoil and is all you need for deer or bear.

Been done to death but both are great and would work.

.30-06 has wider range of bullets, is arguably a little better on big game like moose, elk and bison.

.270 has an advantage at long range due to better BC bullets at a faster speed than a .30-06. It has more energy down range. 95% of hunters would never shoot game far enough to see a difference. It also has a little less recoil than the .30-06, but both are pretty mild in that department.

As for me, I own a .280, better bullet selection than the .270 and better on the prairies than the .30-06.

I own both... prefer the .30-06 for closer shots. .270 has a long range advantage as mentioned earlier but the variety of bullets available in the .30-06 makes it a better choice if you can only afford one rifle...
