Is there a 270 semi that is reliable enough to be a solid hunting rifle or should I just go with a bolt action?

I would appreciate any recomendations and if there is a specific model you suggest for either (let's say 500-1k) it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

BAR, if your determined to go with the self loader. Myself, I'd just go with a bolt and be done with it. I'd rather use use my bolts in the bush than my BAR on the prairie.

My votes for the BAR as well. I use one in 7mm Rem Mag and with handloads its as accurate as most bolt guns. We also have a couple Remington autos that are great too but the Browning is more accurate and smoother operating.

BAR Longtrac. I have one, it's great.

Have R1's too, but they don't come in 270.

You can also get fully detachable floor plates for the magazine in long and short tracs if you don't like the hinge idea.

My foreman at works hunts deer with one in 270. He brought it to the range one day and I got to shoot it. Impressed the hell out of me with it's accuracy with cheap winchester ammo and its soft recoil. He says it's easy to clean too. I would seriously look into one of these if I was looking for a semi hunting rifle. Nicely made and finished too.

Add one more vote for the BAR. I have one in .270 Win. It's very reliable. It was built in 1972 and I bought it new in 1973. It's still going strong and I expect it will be long after I'm not.

A bit of a one horse race. I think this will be first on my list to get my hands on in a store. Thanks for the tips!

Longer carthriges are always more prone to jam, a short action caliber 243, 308 is as close you will get to a never jam problem... JP.

Nugget has been packing his Grampa's minty Belgium BAR for years and it rarely let him down. Only time it did was when he shot cast in it (Grampa's loads) and it may have plugged a port some as it jammed for a while after.

It is not overly picky on what it is fed and has made some incredible shots.
