270 WBY Load Info

Just getting one built I should be able to tell you in a couple of weeks.:D I think its a great cartrige.

Why Not has one,he should be posting soon.

Hello,

Cool cartridge. From what I am reading in the various gun rags the number 1 powder would be Reloder 25, the number 2 would be IMR 7828. 78 grains is a good start with a 130 with Rx 25, warm with a 140 accubond. Check data from various manuals and the IMR website for 7828 data. F 215 caps are a good start.

My current rifle has a 24" Douglas Supreme barrel and has had about 5-600 shots go down the tube. It is the second one I have owned. The bore is still in excellent condition with barely noticeable throat wear. The first was pried out of my hands by a guy who just had to have it for a mountain rifle after he saw it shoot.

I load 130 gr Barnes X, Nosler Partitions and Hornady Interlock bullets to over 3500 fps. Use Re22, H4831, H450 and WC852 to do so.

The loads retain tight primer pockets and the cases never seem to wear out. I have never had a case failure of any kind, and some of them have been loaded many times.

Here's the IMR site showing 3500 using 7828 powder and 130s. http://www.imrpowder.com/data/rifle/270weathmag.php

Both of these rifles shoot into an inch with handloads. I have never shot factory ammo in them so cannot comment on that.

Big game? Believe me when I tell you that 150 gr Swift A-Frames at 3200 fps are absolutely devastating aginst anything we have up here. :D

I know several other guys who have 270 wbys and their experience is the same.

Sighted in three inches high at 100 yds, it is less than eight inches low at 411 yards  which is the distance to the turkey rail on our sillouhette range. That my friends is flat!

It is probably the most overlooked magnum cartridge we have.

basically is a 7mm Mag, a bit on the overbore side of it, so it would like powders on the slow burning side of what the 7mm Rem Mag likes

H4831sc/RL22, 7828, H1000, RL25, Retumbo
