So I just picked up a Remington 700 in 270 Win. and part of the trade was components. All of the bullets are heavy for calibre ie. 150 or 160gr bullets. I know the "norm" is 130 or 140gr bullets. Anyone shooting the heavy stuff in the 270? Certainly going to give up some velocity and flat shooting ability that the .270 is known for. Going back to velocity - my Nosler manual has 160 Partition's(which I got) pushed by RL-19 going at 2750fps, which isn't too shabby and that's the most accurate load not the fastest. Thoughts or experiences?

I worked up a load for my buddy's 270 using 150 gr Partitions, velocity was just under 2900 fps, and shot fairly well out of his A-Bolt. Biggest critter that he shot was a bull moose which required 2 shots due to marginal shot placement.

I've used 130's and 150's mostly, but some 160's, over the years.

I've never really found a .270 bullet that I hated; that's the great thing about the .270.

Accuracy, for me was very good with two rifles, using most every bullet I ever tried.

Your 150's and 160's will give you deeper penetration with less bloodshot meat, but the 130's will give you more spectacular damage to vitals on broadside shots.

You should be able to get more than 2750 out of the 160 Partitions; I get 3000 fps right on the button with flat base Hornady 150's using a full case of IMR 4831.

I am thinking of stepping up to heavier bullets, using 140's now for both hunting and target out of a Browning BBR. The 140 absolutely liquified my black bears heart a few weeks ago, it just caught the back of the opposite front leg so meat damage was minimal, but I am sure if it got a hold of that quarter it would have beat it up pretty bad. Didn't get far though went full sprint for 30 feet before it just fell over.

Thanks guys. Nice to hear some real world experience with the "heavier" stuff. I have some IMR4831 and will try a few other powders as well. It's my first time loading for the 270.

Woodleigh makes and Trade-Ex sells a long 180gr PPSN bullet that is 1.391 inches long and has a very high SD of .334 and a BC of .513 and it will penetrate better than almost any other cup and core hunting bullet in any of the standard calibres. It was designed for African game.

Comments. This bullet just stabilises with a standard 10” twist. Some rifles shoot quite accurately with this bullet. Rifles with a barrel twist faster than 1 in 10” are fine.
