Need a new gun my BBR 270 is nfg. Looking at a tikka t3 in either of the 270s recoil is an issue. Does the wsm give any real advantage. mostly open country deer and the odd elk and moose.

Here is a quick comparison both using Ballistic Tips (Only BC's I had handy - not my idea of a hunting bullet though.)

With a 250 yard zero:

270 WSM w/130gr BT @ 3300fps

300yds : -2.84"
400yds : -12.22"
500yds : -27.33"

270 WSM w/140gr BT @ 3100fps

300yds : -3.18"
400yds : -13.79"
500yds : -30.94"

7-08 Rem w/140gr BT @ 2850fps

300yds : -3.82"
400yds : -16.51"
500yds : -36.46"

The 7-08 gives up nothing in trajectory out to 300yds, ~ 3" at 400yds, and ~ 5.5" at 500yds w/140's (You still will require hold over with either cartridge).

The approx recoil in a 7.5lb rifle:

270 WSM w/140's : 23.11 ft/lbs

7-08 Rem w/140's : 15.75 ft/lbs

The 270 WSM has ~ 32% more recoil

I personally would get the 7-08 Rem if you are recoil sensitive (even if you're not... it is the best (grin)).

I have a T-3 in 270 WSM and I find the recoil similar to my Remington 700 30-06. It seems to give an honest 150 fps over most 270 Win. loads, so you'll have to judge yourself if it is worth it. I will admit that the difference is not huge. I bought my 270 WSM for pronghorn and long range deer, and so far it has done the trick.

My T3 Lite in 270 wsm kicks like a mule. I really don't care for it, not so much the cartridge but the gun itself.
I had a model 700 .270 that I shot last year which I should have kept.

Cheers!!

270 win vs the 270 wsm vs 7mm08

neither....if you want to stay in the .277 to .284 bullet range get a 7WSM....or a plain old 7mm Rem Magnum.......or a 280 Rem....

there,..if you weren't confused before you will be now...

If you are bothered by recoil you should stay away from lightwieght rifles, and magnums specifically. My T-3 light in .270 WSM is not only much flatter shooting than a .270 it carries more energy at distance and is very accurate.
Just get a T-3 and fit it with a limbsaver... just like shooting a mild 30-06.

Agreed. Normally, I'd say 7mm08, but as tikka doesn't make a short action, I'd see a lot of 'wasted potential' of a short action cartridge chambered in a standard action. So, I'd go 280 (assuming Tikka makes one) or a 7mmRM. The 7 mag recoils a bit more than an 06, and would be a bit stout in a lightweight gun; but you can always load down to 7mm08 levels if you want. You cannot load a 7mm08 to 7mmRM levels should the need arise.
