Reading some of the posts in the other thread about either a 270Win or 7mm RM lead me to think.

What wouldn't you hunt with a 270 Win, with lets say a 150gr Nosler Partition?

This is a twofold question. One to see your opinions, the other to help me deside on a hunting rifle.

If you get 12 responses you'll probably get 13 opinions. I'll start, I wouldn't hunt Grizzlies but pretty much all else though there are better chamberings for big moose and elk, but many of these are harder to shoot well which might negate their effectiveness. ( See 2 opinions ;) )
 
What wouln't i hunt with a .270?

1. Elephant
2. Water or Cape Buffalo
3. Rhino
4. Hippo
5. Lion
6. I can go on and on here but for dangerous game there will be no .270 in the equation for me. For pretty much all North American game the .270 is ok. If you're in thick bush with a grizzley though, i might suggest something a little heavier. Say, a .416 Rigby perhaps?

For the second part of your question, we're going to have to know what you plan to hunt and at what distances you're planning on shooting. That'll help us greatly when influencing you on your rifle choice. Good Luck.

270 win

the 270 win is my all around rifle i sight 130 gr 3.5 inches high at 100 and nosler 150 shoot .75 inch lower at 100 with no adjustments
It taken moose elk bear deer coyotes and any thing else that it was aimed at. With good bullets and proper shot placement the 270 is a all around rifle that is suitable for all north American game but the biggest of bears. Practice Practice Practice Practice learn to shoot it well and you will not be disappointed

"...decide on a hunting rifle..." Pick the rifle, then the chambering. However, the .270 will do anything a .30-06 will do with a change of bullet.
"...wouldn't hunt Grizzlies..." It's been done. O'Connor writes about it in 'The Hunting Rifle'. Forget what bullet he used. Can't say as I would either though.
"...1 to 5..." Isn't allowed for hunting any of those, anyway.

I just harvested a 340 pound black bear with my Ruger hawkeye SS/syn using a .270 win loaded with 130 Hornady interlocks. I wasn't as impressed with the knockdown as I hoped. (not the bullets fault, just a tough little bastard). As soon as I hit him, he jumped straight up in the air and took off. The shot hit 1 inch behind the front shoulder, it went through both lungs and took about 1 cm of the base of the heart out. The bullet was inside the skin on the offside.
I only had a couple of blood spots near the impact site, then .......... nothing. I hit him at 1am, and spent the next 2 hours looking for him in the dusk. (its yellowknife, no darkness right now) and ended up giving up. I found him the next morning about 300 yards from where I hit him, in HEAVY growth. The bullet hole had covered up with shifting skin and he didn't bleed much at all. Anyhow, the 270 killed him pretty dead, but I wish I hadn't missed the front shoulder by that 1 inch. Made my hunt a lot harder than it had to be.
 
Unfortunatly, i'm not the famed Mr. O'Conner but i'm with you on not using a .270 for that specific purpose sunray. Sh*T, a .22 lr could be used with the proper shot placement. We've been over this more than once in "Would a (insert caliber here) kill a moose?" threads. I know, a moose is not a bear but a head shot is a head shot. No matter what your trying to kill. And yes, i know for 1 through 5 it's not an acceptable caliber in afrika. I've yet to go unfortunatly. I think i'll have to hoard away some shekels before i can do that. As for my sig line man, who uses there real name? :) Most people don't know about Dorian Gray anyway so it generaly works out. :D To the OP, the .270 will do you just fine anywhere in Canada. Have fun with it man.

I have two .270's, Encore Pro-Hunter and Rem SPS DM.
I also have a 7mm bbl for my Encore. The .270 is more pleasureable to shoot from the bench by far and from what I've been able to achieve in group size with my handloads it surely gets my nod. I can't give any hunting success as the cal is new to me also, but fellow CGN's Hakx & Jay T have nothing but great success on whitetail & mule deer with thier .270's, which is the reason for my choice as well of other threads such as this one that other CGN's have given positive comments on. I think you will have no regrets.
The 7mm RM bbl I have is also a good shooter with 150gr Bosler BT but this bbl will sit this season out.
