A coworker has been telling me that the 270 Win is marginal for bull elk. I have never hunted elk with a 270, so have no first hand experience. What says CGN?

I have shot numerous moose with a 270. Use a well constructed bullet of 140 or 150 gr.. Actually I have had better results with the 270 with a good bullet than a 300wm with a cup & core.

Just stirring it up eh Mark?

Personally I think nothing smaller than a .50 BMG should be used for elk. While moose can occasionally be killed with a .270 we all KNOW that elk are so much tougher.

Well, when moose and grizzly were over the counter tags, the 270 was considered to be a "big" gun locally.

Why would you need first hand experience? This is cgn, grab your axis and reloading manual and get out there and give some advice!

Shot placement.

End thread.

Know where your rifle shoots at range, learn to judge range, learn to judge elk at range, learn topography... yadda, yadda...

Your coworker needs to give his head a shake.

270 Win. 560 yds. Flight 130 TSX. And in four laboured steps he took the proverbial dirt nap.

And in case anyone was wondering, these antlers came off of a bull elk.

I kill alot of Sambar deer (every bit as tough/tougher than Elk, wth shorter legs) with a 270 Winchester and various projectile types.. from 15 meters to 370m (on video)

Tell me which part Your Co worker thought might be marginal?

i will tell you what is marginal..... UnEducated hunters who think any 130gr 270 winchester Ammo is just like the other 130gr 270 Winchester Ammo that "johnny bigshot" said was the medicine for Elk......

These projectiles are most definatly, a Bottom line when it comes to Cartridges and Elks/Sambar......... next in line is that ol chestnut, Shot Placement......... nutha kettle of fish!

I only hunt elk and moose with magnum cartridges. Better down range energy and penetration for the long shots when needed. Nosler partitions and accubonds always preformed a great job.

Must have died of the embarrassment of being hit with a TSX. Hahaha I kid, I kid. 270 is just fine Bartell but you already knew that. I still remember "....... 1 shot 1 bear 1 mk" like it was yesterday.

Have you found standard cartridges lacking or are you just guessing?

I have both the 30-06 and the 300 Weatherby. For the long shot, I'll take the 300 for less margin of error for holdover, and greater downrange energy. The 30-06 has it's place and time.
