I just picked up a Savage model 111 GLNS in 270 win.
I haven't loaded any ammo in this caliber before so I thought I'd come here and ask the experts.
What's everyone's favorite load for their 270?
What is a good powder/bullet to start off with, and is there a prefered brand of reloading dies?
I'm looking for something to punch paper with for now (untill deer season opens anyways)
Thanks for all replies.
Eric

We've developed a load similar to Harold's for my hunting buddy's 270, using a 130 gr TSX bullet. Good for both deer sized critters and the larger ones like moose or elk. Obviously you wouldn't want to pay for TSX bullets to punch paper, but for hunting, they work very well. He's also had good results with a 130 gr Hornady Interlock bullet, which would be less expensive and better for range use.

I use the 140 Accubond and a healthy dose [Start at 56 grains and work up carefully] of Norma MRP or H4831 for everything. Never had any animal go more than 30 yards after one of those in the lungs. Regards, Eagleye.

Here is the combinations that Ive loaded and put meat in freezer with.

150 gr. bullets - IMR 4831 2850 fps
130 gr. bullets - H 4831 3000 + fps

You just need to figure out the load for your particular gun......you can pm me for specifics .

I dont' think the make of dies make that much difference for a hunting load. I have rcbs dies , lyman, Lee, Bonanza / Forster and redding.....they all work.

I have never heard of a 270 bolt action rifle that wouldn't easily handle 60 grains of Surplus H4831 powder with a 130 grain bullet. At the time Jack O'Connor was pushing the 270 so strongly, he wrote in many articles about loading a 130 grain bullet with 60 grains of H4831. At that time the surplus H4831 was dirt cheap, so that load was extremely popular.
Most rifles got about 3100 fps with it.

I like Speer GS 130 or 150 g in each case going as fast as the manual says is safe....I have loaded just about every powder in my 270.....RL22, IMR 4350, 4831, WIN 760, WIN 785 (NA now) and they all were fine
I load Hornady 140BTSP for a couple buddies at 2800 fps and they shoot fine also
