I just bought a 270 WSM but have heard rumours of throat burn or errosion. Is there any truth to this or do I not have to worry about since would shoot maybe 100-150 rnds per year.

as long as you take care to not overheat your barrel, I think a 270 WSM will give good accuracy for 2000 rounds at least.

enjoy your new rifle

I have about four pounds of powder through my Stainless Tikka in .270WSM, all hot loads!
I inspected my bore thoroughly with a bore-scope when I installed the muzzle-break. It showed no wear and no throat errosion, it looked identical to a new stainless barrel we had in the shop at the same time.
I use mostly Retumbo (slow burning) and I Moly coat all my bullets, I believe this does add to barrel life.
Your Short Mag barrel should last your lifetime, probably two lifetimes, under normal hunting conditions.

Got a 270WSM in the summer/fall of '04, checked my records and have 1084 rounds fired through it as of the last range session. My borescope shows pretty much the normal amount of firecracking you would see in any other hi power rifle shooting similar amounts of rounds. Throat erosion of about .003"-004". I don't let the barrel get hot. Chrome moly barrel. I wouldn't consider it a barrel burner.

Well there have been a few documented tests done on the WSSMs and they have debunked the old naysayers who are always crying BARREL BURNER so I would Imagine a WSM is fine.
If you`re that worried Im sure someone would love that rifle and you could get something boring like a 30-06 ;)

Cheers!!

It's hard not to think barrel burner when you look at something like a 223WSSM or 243WSSM. Like you said though, WSM's are fine. You don't hear people talking about 300WM, 7RemM, etc... being barrel burners. Why would these be?

It absolutely does increase barrel life. No question about it!

Makes cleaning them a lot easier, too. Actually, makes not cleaning them a lot easier! :D
