Hey folks.....having a bit of a debate here...thinking about picking up a T3 in 270WSM, but I'm wondering if it will do the job with bigger game (Moose/Elk). Of course there is always the answer "with good shot placement you should be able to take anything out with a small caliber rifle," but I want to be responsible.

The store I've been looking at sold their last 300WSM the other day and they are telling me the 270WSM should do the job just fine....just trying to do my homework before spending the dollars.

I've always shot 30-06 in the past and have been happy with that, just thinking about trying out the WSM to see what all the fuss is about - plus I need a new rifle. I'll be using it mainly on deer, with the occasional (rare) trip out for moose. Anything I purchase should be "one caliber does all." Advice please?

The 270 Win works on them, so will the WSM, giving you a little flatter and harder hitting bullet. My nephew has used his on Elk with no problems, he used 160gr Nosler Partitions. If its used mainly for deer and the occasional Elk/Moose, its an excellent choice.

sure, but you would probably agree that the difference between a 150 gr .277" TSX @ 3000 fps and a 160 gr .284" TSX @ 3000 fps isnt going to add up to alot downrange. given identical shot placement and all that stuff, I dont think you'd notice a difference in 100 elk or moose shot

The plain old 270 Win. has been killing elk and moose for decades now, so sure, the 270 WSM will work. Like todbartell said, maybe stick with good bullets like the TSX.

That is quite possibly true. Then again with a certain shot placement and angle,it just might make a difference on a few animals. If one of those animals was mine,I would be glad that I chose the 7mmremmag instead. There is no question that a little more bullet would provide some added insurance.

Thanks for your comments folks....and the debate goes on. My feeling from what I'm reading is it seems the 270WSM is on the "cusp" of being a little to light for Moose/Elk. Adequate, but not much "insurance" in most cases. I think I might cheap out, and get a trusty old 30-06 again then start saving up for a nice T3 300WSM next season. Cheers,

Rob

I beg to differ. Tell me that a 150 gr Nosler Partion travelling at 3052 ft wouldn't knock down a Moose or Elk?
