This spring I decided to retire my Grandfathers old 514 Rem Matchmaster, purchased in 1960 which has over 60000 rounds through it, and I thought, which 22 cal will my grandson be using in about 50 years? I ended up with a kimber 84 Classic and after putting a bushnell 3-12 on it I shot about 300 gophers with it, and a stray tomcat :) or two. All in all a very classy and accurate 22 which I will get a pile of use from and hopefully hand down a generation or two.

Once in a while when shooting it this summer I thought, what If I had a matching pair of Kimbers in Classic mode. I sat on the idea all summer and when I canola hit 10$/bushel I said this may happen once in a lifetime, and I just happened to be visiting Bashaw sports on business/snooping and spied a 270 WSM 8400 Classic in the shelf. I was able to liberate it from there at a fair price( 1st owner was asking about a good divorce lawyer!:( )

It had about 40 rounds through it and after cleaning it and putting together a load of 61.5 gr 4350 and 130 gr sierra Bt. I hit my range behind the house and shot this 4 shot group.Top shot is clean barrel,

My loading of 60 gr 4350 and the 140 gr TSX was decent,

but I need to do some fine tuning to use this bullet, as 130 gr Sierra is hardly a good choice on an elk Hunt.

I find the 270WSM recoil in the light kimber very gentle, laoding is very straightforward, and sofar this is a great addition to my battery and fits the area I hunt, and the hunting style I use. I hope I can get the TSX to group better and any suggestions are welcomed.
So now I have a decent matched pair of Rifles

I like the lighter weight on the new Kimber as a foothills stalking rifle, but really there is no realistic difference between them Rick. There is a bit better wood/metal fit on the old one though. Personally, I still like the 06 cases better than the WSM platform, but time will tell on its game taking ability. I have about 7 deer licences to fill, so I hope to have a breakdown of the 6.5-06 vs 270 WSM in december, as I plan on using these two rifles this season.

Nice rifles. I used to own an early Kimber of Oregon M82 classic 22LR, and my leg has been sore for a long time...what with all the kicking of my own ass I still do for ever letting it go!

That "old" 6.5-06. Not really representative of a factory Kimber after Leeper was done with it. Heavy, but it was absolutely the steadiest field rifle I have ever handled. 3/4" groups at 200 yards weren't that hard to take either!

Treat them well. And if you need a hand with that many deer tags, I can make myself available! :D

My main contribution was to be smart enough to stay out of Bill's way!

You probably know this, but that rifle was a "fwt" barrel contour 270. Similar barrel contour to a M70 fwt. It shot decently but had an extremely long throat.

I had Bill rebarrel it. We talked about barrel contours, as the foreend was quite large for a fwt contour. It made the rifle very butt heavy. He thought we should use a contour that followed the lines of the foreend. So I had a Pac-Nor standard match grade chrome #4 tube sent to him. He turned it to follow the lines of the stock.

He also slimmed the stock through the grip area to make it sleeker. Then stripped the 30-second spray on finish Kimber used, redid the checkering, and finished it. Tuned the trigger to 2 1/4 pounds, and reblued it.

The result was perfect, just perfect. I've got a nice custom on an old M70 that is close, but I don't think it balances quite as nice as your 6.5-06.

Still using 125 NP's?

very nice......I gotta come down for a visit and see if I can fondle them......on another note....I didn't even kill a gopher this summer...but it's all Ian's fault.....

how does the 270WSM feed?

BTW this is the custom Kimber 6.5-06. I have removed the ammo carrier, just shot it last night and cannot wait to get some game kills with both rifles.

Rembo, sofar the WSM feeds fine, but I have not had a lot of opportunities to shoot it yet.
