270WSM powder suggestions?

Backstory: OK, so I got a Tikka 270WSM. Factory Federal ammo shoots plenty nice in it (0.9-ish inch 5 shot groups); so I known that gun, with me behind the trigger, is capable of it. But there's no way I'm planning on paying $50 a box of 20 on a regular basis! My first choice of powder (IMR7828) for handloads however, isn't doing so hot. Accuracy isn't just totally awful, but it's about 1.6-ish inches at 100 yards consistently -- but 3 out of 5 shots would be tight, with 2 being fliers -- the fliers being random in terms of which shot in a 5 shot group would go wild. So, I did a couple of 5 round groups over the chronograph, and lo and behold; 100% of the "off" shots were showing significant velocity deviations (40+ FPS off the typical velocity of the 3 out of 5 that were making a nice tight group).

My experience duruing load work up for this rifle comfirms that supicion, as I noted that POI will shift about 1/2 or so with 50-ish FPS of velocity change -- so I'm pretty comfortable with the idea that my problem is inconsistent velocity.

I ran all that by a buddy of mine who has been loading for a few decades longer than me, and he noted that his experience with 7828 was similar; velocity deviation and mediocre accuracy.

I bought the 270WSM for a "reach out and touch something" gun, so 1.6-ish MOA isn't really what I had in mind -- 1-ish MOA is what I'm after. Which means, I'm looking for to snag a pound of powder in a flavor more likely to produce consistent velocities and better accuracy.

QuickLoad data suggests that for 130 grain bullets, powder in the neighbourhood of Reloader 25, 7828, etc would produce the best velocity (even R22 would be reasonable), but then my aforementioned buddy suggests 4831 for accuracy -- but QuickLoad suggests that the velocity at max pressure with 4831 would be down near 270Winchester territory (in which case, I'd rather have a 270Win than a WSM).

So, anyone out there with real world experience loading a 270WSM care to suggest a powder that would knock a 130 grain bullet up near the 3300FPS mark while maintaining a fairly consistent velocity/accuracy -- I would much appreciate it. Otherwise, I'll probably be trying a bit of R25 or R22 next (depending on what my local store has in stock that day).

Thanks,

I have a T-3 in 270 WSM and my current load is a 130 TSX over RL 19. The accuracy is very good and the velocity is about 3225 fps. I think I could get higher velocity with a slower powder, but I used what I had on hand and the rifle shoots good enough now not to worry about tinkering with it too much.

Retumbo and Magpro are supposed to be two of the better choices for the 270 WSM.

It looks like you're strggling to get a 100 fps, or so, velocity advantage over the same bullet in a 270 Winchester.
You mentioned something about "the real world," experience. In the real world out there, such a minor difference in velocity is an absolute nothing!
Why wouldn't you just use the tried and true old 270 design from the 1920s that is so accurate and so easy to load for?

Retumbo worked well with 150's in a buddy's T3 SS, but with 130's (TSX) we used H4831sc. 67 grs for 3200 fps avg and good accuracy (1" 3 shots +/-)

Actually, I still pack around a 308 Winchester myself; this is The Wife(tm)'s gun. Though, I did pick it out for her when she wanted something faster/flatter shooting than a 308 Winchester, because as I was looking at a 270 Win, and saw that in the standard barrel length (22 inches) it would make about another 200-ish FPS more velocity than my 308 in bullets with similar/same sectional density. Then, I had a long hard look at the 270WSM, and with half a dozen powders in the 24.5 inch barrel that a Tikka comes in, you can comfortably break the 3300FPS mark (if QuickLoad is to be believed, at least one of them can put you up alarmingly close to 3400FPS). I figured if I'm willing to go from a 308 to a 270 Win to get an extra 200 FPS, why not go all the way to the 270WSM and get an extra 200FPS on top of that.

And no, I'm not "struggling" to get more velocity; the gun/cartridge combo easily delivers on the velocity front (It's making north of 3300FPS and I'm still loading below max with 7828) -- I'm just seeking to find a powder in the same-ish burn rate/velocity range that will produce more consistent velocities (and presumably, better accuracy).

IMR4831 gets me 3330fps out of my 270WSM
Worked loads for a buddy, and we manged an average of 3315fps with IMR7828, with awesome accuracy in both.
Also had some good results in buddies 270WSM with RL22, did'nt chrony those as the RL powders are such a PITA to get some times, we stuck with 7828 for that reason.

Both rifles, 130 gr. bullets.

Retumbo is my powder for my two Tikka T3 LS 270WSM rifles.
One load is @ 69.0gr the other is @ 71.0 COMPRESSED. Both use Federal 215 mag primers. Close to 3300 ft/sec with 5 shot group under 0.4" at 100metres.

Used the 69.0gr loads in a friend's new T3 Camo 270WSM rifle last year to sight in and it shot under 0.5" groups.

H1000, 7828SSC and MagPro are other powders and I have H1000 and 7828SSC but with the results I get with my rifles at the range and performance on big game (elk/moose/bears/deer) using 140gr Accubonds.....I'm sticking to my Retumbo loads.

I sure love this caliber/bullet combo.

I also have a Tikka .270WSM and I am using 63.5g of RL22 with Federal 215, Remington brass, and Barnes TSX 140gr. Common groups of 5 are all touching in one way or another, often coming in at .675 - .800 (centre to centre). I am very happy with that kind of accuracy. Haven't tried RL19, but that was my second choice until I saw how this load shot...and I never even bothered.

I use RL19, 130TSX, winchester cases, WLRM primers. Seated to just fit in the mag. Works great for me. Way under 1 moa. Loaded just above max published data, fine in my T3.

I load .270 WSM for a family member, and we have had good results with IMR 4350.
And IMO wringing every last fps out of the cartridge and rifle is certainly toward the bottom of my list of what I want in a load.

1. Absolute reliability (reliable fire+feed)
2. The best possible projectile for the purpose
3. Accuracy+uniformity (in keeping with the purpose/use of load the difference between a big game load and a gopher load )
4. Efficiency- I want the best bang for my buck
5.And last and certainly least velocity, because a deer just doesn't notice 150 fps faster or slower, and without my chronograph NEITHER DO I.

I use a lot of IMR 4350 becuse it is so flexible and performs well for so many different cartridge/bullet combo's, keeps me from having to stock too many different kinds.
