i have a model 70 in 300 and love it.
my friend has a 270WSM in model 70 as well - says its a tact driver

with winchester closing the plant. would it be wise to pick one up or should i steer clear and go for something else altogether?

Take alook at the Kimber rifles they are pretty much a suped up Model 70, very accurate, well balanced and great craftsmanship from what I hear.

Cheers!!

I have a Kimber Classic in a 270 WSM and so does my hunting partner, both rifles are very accurate and very nice. I'm waiting for my Kimber Montana to come now in a 270 WSM...maybe this month. I love this calibre.

But if you want to go with the Model 70, I know where there is still one sitting on the self brand new in a wood/blued model but it's not the featherweight model.

Tikka T-3 if your on a Budget these are great shooters and great value.
The Sako and the Browning/Winchesters have the true short mag actions. I would buy the Sako or the Browning in that order. I have not had enough exposure to the Winchester to give it an honest appraisal.
You get what you pay for.

I have both a Kimber and a Winchester M70. They are great rifles and would go for either one. If you carry your gun and still hunt the Kimber has the edge due to it's very light weight. Mine is a 8400 Classic but if I bought another it would be a Montana, it is more trouble free because of the stainless and synthetic. Not as pretty as a blued and walnut rifle though IMO.
