Hello

I have recently found an older fixed choked Win 101 28 ga field model shotgun and am interested in your opinions on its value. It is a safe queen - virtually mint and hardly shot. The wood is fairly straight grained - not much to look at but not a scratch or ding. They were asking $2500 for it - seems quite steep. I am thinking more along the lines of $1700. Is this still too much?

Any opinions appreciated.

Bill

In the 2003 Standard Catalog of Firearms a Win. 101 Field grade in Exec. condition is listed at $825 for a 12 or 20 ga. Add 40% for 28 ga. They only get into the high $2000 + range for a Super Pigeon Grade.

Bill you are just about bang on for a field grade. I would say 1500- 1750 max.
2500 too much for a field grade 28ga 101

In my humble opinion, the 101 field grades have never really been a sought after model like the higher grades.
Get into the Pidgeon, Grand Europeans and Quail Specials and the values used to get up into the nosebleed sections, note I say "used to" and that was in the USA. They are not selling at the previous high prices, nor have values / prices paid in Canada ever matched the Americans
Are they a nice gun ? I think so.
28 ga is a fun guage but the field model is built on a 20 ga frame and therefore actually heavier than the 20 ga.
Is it a 26 " barreled ( less desirable by many) or 28" barreled ?
What chokes ?
The OP says in mint condition hardly shot.
Even so, I would value for sale closer to $1200.00 to $ 1300.00 tops or its going to take a lot of time to find the right person willing to pay some of the prices mentioned. Those of us that are dated far enough back may nostalgically think of how some of these older fine shotguns are worth paying for the quality and workmanship put in but I think in reality buyers in Canada for quality doubles is a very small percentage of the market and smaller yet those that will pay premium prices for non choke-tubed guns.

The Winchester Model 101 in 28 gauge can be a hard bird to find. The prices in recent years on these shotguns has been on the rise. They are wanted both for their shooting and collector value. It would not surprise me to see them going for $2,500.

The 70's and 80's model 101's are not really sought after as collectibles 28ga would generate some interest because of gauge more than anything $1,200.00- $1,500.00
