28 gauge wads!!!! why so complicated?

Hi guys, trying to take the plunge and get some 28g reloading stuff. I want to buy a MEC600jr and reload the AAHS hulls that I have fired off in my 48AL. Having a bit of a time finding the Claybuster wads, but that 's what I want to try, the one I need is the -28HSA correct? My understanding is that it is a special wad for the HS hull. Anyone tried these Down Range PC- Blue wads? Are they also interchangable with the Winchester wad? Thinking about using Unique or 20/28, which ever I can find localy, thanks
 
The Claybuster wad is CB 5043-28HS. FWIW, I've used them and the wad designed for the AA in the AAHS hulls and they've both worked fine. I haven't tried the Down Range wads.

I load on a MEC Jr. and here are a some things I've learned. The first is to look and listen that the shot has dropped before you remove the hull. The 28gauge drop tube is narrow and sometimes it can get clogged. Naturally, just as you move the hull, the shot drops free and rolls all over the floor. :mad:

The second thing is that as you move to the crimp starer, position one of the crimp points on the hull so that it faces towards you to ensure a good crimp.

Finding components for the 28 gauge can sometimes be challenging but it is worth it when you do. I'm loading for well under 1/2 the cost of cheapest factory loads. :)

I also load all 4 gauges with Mec Jr's. For 28 gauge I use IMR's 7625, with the CB 5034-28HS wad, in the AAHS hulls. Its a bulkier powder and requires a little more setup time and a few sacrificed hulls to find the sweet spot, but IMHO, I find it burns consistent and clean in the 28. Try Williams Arms in Port Perry Ontario, they might have the CB wads u need.

I have yet to try 7625. I've loaded Universal Clays and Unique. I bought 8lbs of Unique because it was relatively inexpensive and have been happy with it. Maybe I'll do some experimenting when it runs out.

I use 7625 in both 20 and 28. With good results. I was told that the 7625 simply would not fit in the newer AAHS hulls with the 5034-28HS wads but a little bit of tinkering and they will work safely and get one heck of a nice crimp too.

Another thing too about the newer AAHS wads the HS will have a line underneath them, this signifies a difference in hull height that might need an adjustment of the final crimp station as well. CB have you noticed this as well????

Yes I have noticed the difference in the heights with the AAHS. Winchester went to the longer hull in 2006. Here's a link to an item on ShotgunWorld that explains it. Just copy and paste it into your browser.

Use the claybuster 28 ga hs wad with Longshot works fine. Claybusters can be had from Lloyd @ Irv's shooting supplies in courtice ON.

Not doing a "lot" of loading for the 28, but what components I needed I got out of Alta. from Will Bilozir. He's an independant guy who stocks Ballistic Products merch. You can reach him at bismuth@bilozir.net Ask him about the 28ga. slugs. I have a Verrees & Oste (Belgian made in about 1945) SXS, with exposed hammers. A Real gem. The 28 is a real super gun and should make a serious comback when others find that out too!
 
Where are you guys sourcing your lead and or steel shot? I just picked up 2 mec 600's for a real good deal and have not found a good source for shot.
