any one do this ??

any muzzleloader ball mold close enough to work / be accurate ?

loading data? i was thinkin of using pyrodex or black powder loads .

any advise most welcome !!

Round-ball loads are iffy most of the time. They can work wonders out of a rifled barrel but in a smoothbore are usually relatively poor. You are essentially making a smoothbore musket. Reports on the Dominion Arms "slugs" sold by Canada Ammo, which are actually round-ball loads, range from mediocre to poor. Several reviews I've seen on them talk about 6-10" groups at 25yds. So we're talking around 12-20" groups at 50yds; not exactly accurate enough to hit a deer in the vitals. It all really depends on fit of ball to bore, choke, and velocity. It may work better with an attached wad design as it could drag-stabilize.

A 28ga is supposed to be around .550" but it will vary from shotgun to shotgun. 12ga for example is supposed to be .729" but varies often from .725" to .735" depending on the manufacturer.

Some people have found really accurate round-ball loads for their shotguns with smoothbore barrels but that seems to be more the exception than the rule. Generally from my understanding is you want the ball to be very tight in the bore (which varies from gun to gun and manufacturer to manufacturer), have a C or IC choke, and stick to moderate velocities.

Personally, it's something I'd want to try anyway as I'm a tinkerer and see if I can get it to work. I wouldn't keep my hopes up but I've been pleasantly surprised with test loads before.

Ballistic Products does make a 28ga round-ball with wad package and has data for it in their manual (which uses many of their proprietary components so I'd order the manual before any components). Bilozir Fine Guns is the Canadian distributor for Ballistic Products Inc. Will can order in pretty much anything off of the Ballistic Products website. You can order the manual directly, figure out which components you need, and order those from Bilozir.

See you have 273 trades, not exactly a newbie or down to this as a only choice for a hunting firearm. Having gone down similar roads, what happened to me was i chased ideas like this. Spent a bunch of money and then the project sits in the back of the safe. When you only have so much time off, and want to have some venison come back for the time and money, the best option comes out of the safe.

My suggestion is look for someone that has already built this mousetrap. Someone must make 28 slugs, or buckshot. Buy some, play at the range, maybe make one of the 28 singles, your BOB bag survival gun. Coming apart in three pieces it would be great for defense, deer in emergency, some shot for small game, and fit in a small package. Added benefit would be low recoil, as some 12, 16, and 20 gauge singles i have shot are among some of the worst for recoil.

I had success with Blue Dot powder in the twenty gauge. I'm thinking Ballistic Products International should provide something in the way of wads/reloading advice?

Maybe you should PM Catnthehat??

I have a box of 25 Imperial 28 guage slugs, the description on the box says 3/4 ounce ball, these are plastic 2 3/4 hulls so they are somewhat modern. I acquired these when I bought the gun about 15 yrs. ago, part of the deal for the gun was several boxes of shells. If you check out enough gun shows you might find some!

The bore diameter on a 28 gauge is .550 and a full choke is a .525 so you may be able to use .50 caller handgun bullets as slugs.

^Uhm........perhaps one could safely use the pure lead .500 round ball and a proper plastic wad through a choke of X or Y dimensions.
But I'm thinking most of us here would absolutely dread the thought of driving even a half copper jacketed, soft pointed pistol bullet, through a shotgun choke.

hey, but that's just me

Best to read the reloading section of the 28 gauge society forum. Search slugs and there is some conversations but from what I have read most are leaning towards the factory Brenneke
Cheers
