280 AI Redding Bushing

That would depend on your neck thickness and if you turn your necks. Normally Redding recommends a bushing .002 smaller than the neck of a loaded round.

"BUT" if you do not neck turn they recommend .004 smaller and use the expander.

In the Forster bushing bump die in that caliber they come with three bushings, .308, .306 and .304. This compensates for different neck thicknesses and if the necks are turned.

NOTE, I get less neck runout with the Forster full length benchrest dies than with bushing dies with standard off the shelf factory rifles. When the neck is reduced .004 or more with a bushing it will induce neck runout. And Redding recommends reducing the neck diameter in two steps if reducing the diameter .004 or more. Bushing dies work best with tight neck chambers and neck turned brass.

Come on, you’re slipping. Don’t tell me you don’t have some drawings or graphics to illustrate that! ;)

OK bcsteve you win, I prefer full length resizing with non-bushing dies because with factory rifles the neck will expand more than .004. And the bushing floats, and it can move from side to side and even tilt. Long story short, too many things that benchrest shooters do filters down to the average reloader with factory rifles and they are not needed.

Watch the video below, Forster recommends "if needed" to have the neck of their dies honed .004 smaller than a loaded round. And a full length non-bushing die will produce more concentric cases than a bushing or a neck sizing dies. This is because the case is fully supported, meaning the case body and neck vs bushing or neck dies. This is one reason the Lee collet dies are so popular, they produce more concentric cases than bushing dies.

Did I tell you I like the Forster full length benchrest dies much better than the Lee collet dies.
