alright, what is on my mind is a lighter spot and stalk rifle. the action is a remington 700. the stock will be a boyds Ross Featherweight Thumbhole 2.5lb (hard to bet the price at $97 to my door when on sale). as for the barrel im looking at the shilen SS match. this is were im stumped, what contour. im leaning toward the "2 Lightweight @ 24" .575 muzzle, 3 lbs 3oz". i have a few scopes to pick from here alread. so would this be a good contour, and what will i be looking at weight for just the rifle.

The barrel is fine, and depending on how light you you want to go, it might be too heavy. That barrel and a laminate stock isn't gonna result in a rifle that is lighter then any other factory rifle out there.

My last 280AI was a 24" M700 MR contour barrel. As I recall that's abut 0.535" at the muzzle, perhaps less than that. It averaged less than 0.6" for about 20 3-shot groups at 100 yards with 140 accubonds. With 150TSXs it was more accurate than that.

Build the rifle to balance as Brambles advised. If you pick a good barrel it will shoot regardless of the contour.

Well Capt. Lube that rifle will weigh roughly 7.75lbs empty as described. Not a lightweight by any means. Do a Shilen #1 at 23" and a JRS Boyds with the forend thinned and bogged out and the buttstock hollowed and you'll get down to 6.5lbs. Or find a stock off of a Mountain Rifle LSS.

Oh from a foggy memory 36 oz rings a bell. I can't remember if that's ADL or BDL though. The last Boyds Thumbhole sporter I weighed was 44oz. So 36 plus 44 plus 45 is 125oz. Gives you a little over 8lbs, but I would reckon in the Boyds at closer to 36 these days. So 7.75 would be about right.
Personally for the cartridge you are looking at, I would do a #2 Shilen in CM and watch the parts and pieces EE for a lighter stock like a Bansner or Titanium pull off.
But maybe a 7.75lb rifle (closer to 9 scoped and loaded) is a good weight for you. You'll never know until you try.

I recently built a 280 for myself. The barrel is .550 at the muzzle and the contour is roughly a Douglas #2 minus 50 thou. Built on a pre-64 Model 70 action and with a slimmed down factory stock, the rifle looks light, balances well, but still weighs close to eight pounds, all up. I could drop close to a pound with a glass stock and might do so, though it goes against my grain. I think the same sort of specs on a 700 would weigh about three ounces less; mostly due to the aluminum bottom metal. Regards, Bill.

I have a 280 AI on a Ruger action. Shilen 23 1/2", .600 muzzle. Haven't shot it much but well under an inch with both 140 and175 gr. FWIW.
