Hey all so i just got myself a .280 Remington. and although I have done alot of reading on this Chambering i would like to here from you experienced loads and hunters with the .280 your bullets of choice and Game.. Personally i shoot a custom 7mm-08 loaded with 175gr bullets for long range shooting, as well as 139gr GMX for hunting White tail deer.

My plan for the 280 is to be a lighter(in weight) deer rifle for dad, loaded with H4350 and the 139GMX im hoping to get 3000-3100FPS, but also it will be my back up Moose rifle in the event dad and i both go.. then he can carry the 338-06 and i can carry the 280 loaded with heavy bullets...... the one that caught my eye was the new 160gr Federal Trophy Bonded Tip. IF i load these over IMR 4831 im hoping to get these to about 2800 fps, but i also have the 150gr Swifts sitting at home and really like there bullets and think they would handle bull winkle nicely if loaded to a modest 2900 FPS.

Now for you experienced loaders... do I sound on track... whats your bullet of preference... powder preference. etc.. I will be using 30-06 Lapua brass that is still new.. necking it down once i get a die set.

Thanks again
Josh

These are are my loads and they shoot well with no pressure signs in my rifle. I use 139 Hornady BTSPs for deer at 2975 fps with H4831 and more velocity is possible but the accuracy drops off. For larger game I use 160 Partitions at 2850 fps using IMR 7977 at below max loads again for best accuracy, this powder seems to get very good velocity in my 280 at modest pressures.

My favorite 280 powders : H4831sc, Accurate Magpro, Alliant RL19, 22, 23, 26

There's so many good hunting bullets on the market. I have some of the 160gr TBT to try, looks like a great design. 139gr GMX would be just great for moose, don't sell that monometal short. I have a box of 150gr Scirocco to try too.

I shoot the 160 partition and 162 eldx in my 280 rem at 2890fps and 2920fps respectively with imr 7977. I have some 145lrx on the bench to play with if the fancy strikes me.

A word of caution, the TBT and the gmx do not open well below 2600fps so run the numbers and see how far a shot that is in your rifle. If you want to do a mono I'd strongly consider the 139 and 145 lrx as they do open well at speeds below 2600fps.

Cheers

Thanks all for the Replies. Once i get the scope mounted i will get some of those 139 GMX loaded with IMR 4831 and H4350. see which on shines in the accuracy and velocity department. Im definitely not selling the 139 GMX short as it was my 7-08 back up moose load going just shy of 3000fps. I was shooting the 150 swifts but never killed anything with them.... i have about 20 left.. ill try them with load development.. if i get a reasonable load with them i wouldn't mind the extra weight when driving threw the shoulders of a moose and not bother with the TBT.

Thanks all again!!!!

The 160 grain Speer Mag Tip was my bullet of choice for a number of years and then switched to Barnes 140 grain TTSX. The two bullets are similar in length.
The objective was to exceed 3000 fps using Re19 powder. The powder charge exceeded the Barnes loads and so did the velocity.
The heavier 160 grain Barnes bullet in the 7.08 and 280 might be to long to stabilize at least the 115 grain was in my 25-06. Printed on the box was a suggestion for a 1 in 9 twist and mine is 1 in 10. Sometimes they know better.
