Was thinking of purchasing a 7mm08 and getting it reamed out to 280AI. This would save the cost of a barrel swap.

I understand the bolt stops would need to be changed out.

Am I missing anything else to get it converted?

For this project (gun purchase excluded) what would I expect to pay for the gun smithing?

The twist is fine... are you using just the barrel from the 7mm 08? If you plan on using the action, is it long enough?

I'm still wondering about this, 280 ackl vs the 7mm RM. The 7rm can duplicate the 280 velocity or exceed it if desired.
Sooo in order to save $$ and the fire forming headache the 7RM is a better choice.
Enjoy.

I actually had a 7mm-08 T3X Superlite rechambered to 284Win this past year. A long action mag and bolt stop and we were on our way, don't see why a 280AI would be any different. The factory 1-9.5 seems to stabilize a 162 ELD-X just fine. But that's as heavy as I've run, so I can't speak to anything more.

I’ve got a FrankenTikka that has a reamed out T3 7-08 barrel into 280ai with a T3x 30/06 action.
I’ve had no issues and it’s now my “go to” setup. Put it together on a whim. It loves the 162 grain ELD-X
as well. Im a fan of the 22” barrel. Great for what I do. Perhaps a Wildcat stock next....

The 7MM Rem Mag does hold more powder and will out FPS a 280 AI - there's NO fireforming required for a 280 AI if you use 280 AI Brass which is VERY available ! RJ

That a NICE combo - who did the barrel rechamber ? RJ

I actually run mine in a Wildcat. If you decide to jump in and do the same I found that the Remington Supercell pads fit pretty darn close, weigh very little, and work quite nicely.

I replied to RJ in a PM but I suppose I should answer here too. Corlanes was where I bought the rifle and they cut the chamber for me before they shipped it.
