Will a .284 Shehane case feed without issues from the LA AI mags? I am thinking about adding some AI based DBM to Rem 700 LA for a .284 Shehane project.

Troy, save your money and make a straight .284

Or if you are set on the Shehane then find a way to get die blanks made up.

Dies cost me $600 to my door from Bill Shehane and all I got was a Redding FL neck die, 1 Wilson Neck Die and 1 Wilson Seater die not even in SS. :(

I have a 6.5/.284 Shehane already and was thinking about having the bushing die opened to accept the bigger neck diameter. Not sure if this will work or not but have done it before with wildcats based on the 6mmBR Lapua imporved in 6.5 and 7mm for metallic silhouette.

For a seating die I will just buy the Redding Comp die in .284 and run the finish reamer into the sleeve. I have done this with several wildcats before.

My issue is not the .284 versus the Shehane debate. If the case meets my expectations and is a keeper I always have tight tolerance custom dies made anyway.

My issue is whether or not the parent .284 case will feed from the AI long action mag which is designed for a slightly longer magnum case. The case will be shorter, diameter should not be an issue because I thoought the mag lips needed to be adjusted for 06 type cases in the LA AI mags.

Lonnie Hummel no longer does the custom work at Hornady but Ben can make a set for you, $150. CyaN1de, did you explore this route or just get them from Shehane because he developed the round? I called Bill about dies last fall and he told me I must neck turn because of the donut caused by going up in diameter. I seat bullets above the donut so I disagree. I considered getting another reamer to make dies but they really should be hardened and for one set it is more money.

284 Shehane dies are proprietary. You are not likely to find a reputable company that will build them for you.

I have several of Jim Carstensen's custom dies, send him some fired cases and in a couple of weeks you get back one of the finest tight tolerance custom dies you will use. Likely the only one better may be the Alan Warner dies but at quite a substantial price jump from the JLC dies.

I talked to Bill Shehane about getting a reamer done as a courtesy and he said no problem. I doubt he cares if people make custom dies for the case.

I just don't want to buy bottom metal, have a stock inletted for said bottom metal only to find out it is not going to work.
