Hi All, I was handed down a Winchester model 88 requires .284 ammo. Having done the internet search I cannot find ammo however I can find brass in the us. Any one know where I can get the supplies to reload for this rifle ? or ammo ? perchance ??/??

I think the .284 Winchester is a great cartridge, and in that model 88 it might be worth a few bucks. You are in luck for brass. All you have to do is buy Lapua 6.5x284 brass and run the expander ball through it to bring it up to .284.

Do you reload already? I have 50 virgin Win brass. Add 7mm bullets, large rifle primers suitable powder and you're good to go.

Win 760 /H-414 are great powders for the 140-150gr bullets........mag primers with ball powder.........Harold

Just started loading for mine. Lucky to have my grandfather's Model 88 in 284 and a Model 100 carbine in 284. It's a really great cartridge! Factory ammo is few and far between and expensive. Loading your own is the way to go.

You can get load data at the Hodgdon site. I would suggest a 168 grain Berger Classic Hunting bullet, Hodgdon H4350 powder, and Federal 210M primers for a start. And as I posted earlier you can get good Lapua brass from Hirsch Precision.

You can get a reloading die set from Lee - 284 Winchester

Just a word of advise to anyone loading the .284 Win cartridge, it has been my experience with it (two of my own and my old mans) that with the sharp shoulder angle and the short neck they are susceptible to excessive throat erosion with "hot loads". Both my Savage 99's showed diminished accuracy after less than 500 rounds (one deteriorated to dinner plate groups at 100), the other, my old mans Browning Medallion, (I don't know the round count but it wasn't very many) went from a tack driver to more than "minute-of-deer" in 6 or 8 yrs. I know his were hot loads because we shot side by side a time or two thru my Crony...he was getting equal read-outs to my 7 Rem Mag using 145 gr Nos.
