Friday I am going to get my 284 started with load development. I have a 1-8 twist and am using either the 180 Berger or the 175 Sierras. Any suggestions on powder and weights would be appreciated. I plan on using 4831SC, Retumbo or H1000. Thanks in advance, Don.

RL17 has thus far shown itself to be high temp tolerant, can't say with cold temps.

Its burn rate is in the same ballpark as 4350. H1000 and Retumbo would be very slow by comparison.

RL17 is not in Canada yet. I had to source it outside the country.

So far... 57.0 gr of H4831SC is pushing the 180 gr Berger @ 2840. 5 shot groups are 1" vertical and 1.5 " with wind @ 300 yds. No pressure signs yet and it was 25 degrees. Thanks for the input.

I am shooting a New (only 150 rounds so far) 284 Shehane, with a 30'' Krieger barrel 8.5 twist. It Loves 180 Bergers, & 56.6gr of H4831sc BR2 primers @ 2850fps, OAL is 3.170. I Tried 55gr of R17 it ran 3020fps, going to play with that a Little more this weeked.

I was going to build a 6.5 for myself but since I have some 7mm barrels in stock that seem a bit hard to move I decided to go with a 284. A bit more recoil but longer barrel life and will out shoot a 6.5, can't loose!

Out shoot a 6.5??????

Mr Robertson, We may agree on the case [284] BUT a 7MM outshooting a 6.5mm??? Can't be done!!!! More recoil does not transmit to a more accurate caliber. They're close but I believe in the 6.5. enough said.
Enjoy the new toys Bill

YMMV but it has been proven in the field and in the lab that the 7mm has it over the 6.5
The biggest difference is that guys are able to reach 6.5/284 velocities shooting the 180 Bergers. higher BC will win out when the same velocity is achieved. recoil management is a shooter problem and when controlled becomes a non factor.

Ian
whose barrels do you have, what twist and what finishing length

you should easily be able to reach 2950 with the 284 shehane there is supposed to be a sweet spot around 2950

Sorry this work thing is a PITA... Hopefully I will get out on Monday. I don't have a OAL for you guys. Mick Mcphee did the work, XP 100, RKS 1-8 1.37'x30", stock is of my own design (big bstrd thumbhole). Scoped the rifle weighs 20.5 lbs. Yes it has a very long .285 throat, as I found that the Bergers were just slightly over bore. Hopefully I will get to play some more shortly, but there is very limited cash in the play fund due to strike action (2 months and counting)....
