284

like a 280 in a short action:) ......Win M70's are have a longer mag box than most other short actions and are a good action for the 284..IMHO. I have built two, one a short 700 with a stretched mag box and the other a rechambered 7-08 Improved on a Sako L579....I might have another one here soon:D...I have a Model Seven with pistol barrel(18-1/2") and a 22" Smith 7-08 Imp tube that will probably become a 284 before long.

Factory bolt rifles in 284 are rare, Ruger made some 77's in 284 back in the 70's or 80's...Sako made a few on the L579 Forrester, Wichester made a few with the detachable mag setup about ten years ago. They are out there. But any 'smith can build you one.

284 will do nothing better than a 280, 7mmag & not much better than a 7mm-08. just can't personally see the point in working with expensive hard to find cases when others do the job just as well.

Would I turn one down if that's the caliber the rifle came in...NO
Just is not high on the list of calibers I would pick.
At least that's my opinion

Gunnutz like odd calibers and the 284 is one of them, but as mentioned, you would be better off with a 280 or a 7Mag.

.284 case design is nice, short and fat, basically an improved shoulder already. Brass is not hard to find at all and with the wildcats based on it, it should be around for a while.
I use .284 brass to form 7.5x55 for my K31's, and I like it so much I'm thinking of having my .308 winchester reamed out to 7.5x55.

the 284 case "looks" like a wildcat in it's factory form with it's 35 degree shoulder...when necked to 25 or 24 caliber it looks even more so. With the advent of the short mags I think it'll see less use than it used to. I still like it for a short light rifle when you don't want or need the case capacity, velocity and recoil of the short mags. I'm seriously considering another 284, this time on a Model Seven...brass is easily avaliable and only a few $ more per 50 than more common stuff, I think I saw new WW brass at P&D for $35 per 50.

If the few dollars difference in the price of brass is a factor in a chamber consideration then you can't afford the gas to go out shooting anyway:D

$25/50 at higginsons if you need any.

stuff based on the 284 case interests me, although the 284 itself doesnt as much

25-284 I own is wicked (for sale btw ;)), the 6.5-284 looks to be a real great cartridge, and the 30-284 probably does anything the 30-06 will do with 180 gr. and lighter bullets.
