With a cold night last I thought as long as the wind was not to strong today it was going to be a good day for calling.... I arrived at my 1st location at first light...as I was walking in I noticed some tracks on the edge of the field....good....no wind and cold......a great time to call.....

I set up on the edge of a bush line....set up my caller about 150 yds from the main bush and 75 yard from my bushline....Once I got all set up and before my caller started to play, I let out a few coyote howls/pitches (its the sound that is like a siren) from my hand caller.....

My caller started playing and after about 5 mins or so, my mind started thinking about my next location and how I would set up.....In my limited experience after the first few minutes of calling and nothing has shown up, nothing ever does, boy was I wrong.....

At about the 7 minute mark I have one coyote coming to my call (arrow points direction of travel)....He trots and stops, trots and stops...Then the last 50 yds or so starts trotting straight in to the call.... I get a little nervous (thinking it might smell the human ordour from the call) so I bark out to him....bark.....bark...and he stops...I let him have it from my steven's 223 elite 3200 4x12 55gr bullet right into the chest (quartering to)....I watch it all in the scope as it hits and he spins around and around and then starts to run off....As I get my eye off him to reload I loose him in the corn stocks/taller grass in the background.....I am thinking he should be down and let the caller keep playing.....about 30 secs later I see a coyote running about 500yds back...now I start thinking maybe I did not hit it good, hope that is a different coyote......

As more time passes I begin to think I should of made a follow up shot right away on the coyote, I may have lost this one....

5 mins more pass and I see a coyote running from my left about 200 yds out and runs into the tall grass (pays no attraction to my call)...A minute later another coyote from the same place comes running across the field and makes its way to the tall grass.....I let out a few loud barks, but it does not stop... A few minutes later one of those coyotes comes out of the tall grass and trots out into the field about 175 yds, stops to look at my caller and decoy but continues to move away...I bark a few times he stops for a few seconds...I try and find him in my scope...I can't corn stock in my way..By the time I find him in the scope he is trotting away (I need more practice at that)...I tried to get him to stop again but no luck...

I waited a few more minutes and decided to see if my first coyote was down or I did I have a long tracking job ahead of me...

Turns out I hit the coyote pretty good, through the front shoulder and into the vitals, he traveled about 30 yds...

Prone with a bi-pod? Sitting against a tree? In a tree? Ground blind?

I wear full camo and put on my turkey vest afterwards...It has a lot of pockets plus a seat is attached....I just sit on the ground, a yard or two in from the tree line on the right... I use shooting sticks.....They can be seen in the pic....

So I basically sit on the ground a yard or two in the taller grass/tree line and look out into the field with the call about 70 yds away at a 45 degree angle from me pointing to the bush....

Nice setup.

I was out yesterday and we had 3 stands in different areas known to have coyotes. We didn't see anything :(

What are you using for a decoy? It looks like the homemade weasel ball from VarmintAls site. If so, where did you find the weasel ball? I've been looking for one.

Where abouts you hunting, I'm from Brantford area too and hunt out on the east side of the county out past Cainsville. Not been out yet this year for yotes but hopefully soon.

Congrats on a good day.

Great story and nice pics. As you stated in your story it is at times difficult to aquire a target with the scope lens. A trick taught to me by an old vetran is to shoulder your rifle with both eyes open and focused on the intended target. With the gun now shouldered and the target...or general location... still visible with the left eye then look through your glass and the target will be centred in the scope with your right eye. Practice this next time your in the field on some distant object. Works every time:)

Sure beats squinting with your left eye and desperately glassing with the right trying to find a critter.:D

I was out calling today, sitting just inside the trees on the edge of a field. This was my first time out and I didnt see anything, but it was still fun. Hopefully next time i will. Looks like you had some fun though.

Great story and a good primer for coyotes this winter.

Tis the season for coyote.

I also was out this morning and saw lots of tracks.

We've got more coyote per sq mile than deer around here, so I'm gonna get the dust off my calls and dig up those 70 grain 243 loads and try and start whackin a few.

It's the best we can do to preserve our game populations.:)
