Hello
well was out shopping with wifey today and decided to stop in at barrie cabelas and walked up to the gun counter to look at the sks's
tall guy placed one on the counter and I looked it over, very clean and the bolt was smoother then my other one....infact I engaged the safety to find in had a click to it..thought hey my other doesn't..cool.
I asked the sales guy since the sale ones out of stock and this one more expensive...I don't care for the stock so what is the difference 1951r stamped on the receiver if that helps anyone.
he tells me no rust and may be in overall better cond then my other..I ask him does this one come with spring loaded firing pin he says yes all do except for the ones on sale and matching numbers..as I look over the gun again I say why not box it up please...
I look around and come back to have someone else cash me out..
got home and took apart to swap out my other one as it isn't as nice ( other one barrel has marks and such)
find out free floating firing pin...nice
kick my self for not taking it apart at the store. oh well...upon inspection of both while apart I noticed my first one doesn't have a spring on the safety this one does
both are 1951r
new one looks a bit better finish wise that is and the bolt is better not as stiff..
found out the tapco mags don't like the new sks I had to grind down some of the material to get them to fit and only two of nine will insert after bolt mod..very wierd
will take more time later to get the other seven to insert with closed bolt.
overall I'm happy with second sks my first one I put back into wood stock but the gas tubes I didn't switch so tapco stock with wood gas tube cover and wood stock with tapco gas cover..need to get pin set..maybe
may take out to back of property on wednesday to try it out and sight it in
also picked up rifle bench omg..why didn't I do that long ago made working on rifle so much easier..lol
the wartak mount was a bit of a pain forgot what I used to remove rear sight pin as I don't have punch that small...used nail....lol
anyone know why the 2nd sks has a smoother action then the other?
thanks
Glenn.

no two SkS are the same brother....They may look similar but the tolerances on the rifles are bigger. One may fit tight in your wood stock, the other may be loose. They used different springs in the trigger safety's as well. I have two SKS a 1951r BBQ paint that has a spring safety. I have a 1953r withougt the spring. The 53 is blued, the 51 is bbq, haven't shot the blued one yet but the bbq one works just fine. That's part of the fun with these rifles over a new in box cookie cutter everyone is the same rifle. SKS has personality. the quicker you get to know yours , the more fun you're going to have. cheers man

yes I was out in peterborough and they had them on for 25 bucks so bought a bunch ...my luck only having two or three I'll brake one...
hopefully I'll get out tomorrow in the back and test it out...the bolt was black too compared to the other one..yes I know each are different.
can't wait to try out..when I have time I'll spend more time with the mags to get them all to fit with bolt closed...no big deal.
but overall nice rifle..

RE: Mags - I have 3 plus another 2 Baur mags. I've recently retired them all to the parts bin though as I found they just don't feed from stripper clips as easily and quickly as the factory mags. (Despite modding the Tapco lips)

I have the wartak rail on so stripper clips are out...my thing is i have a battle belt so having a few mags is great..remember pinned to five rounds so its not like I'm carrying tons of ammo...five shots each..ooooooo
just find it funny that one 1951r with bolt mod works fine and second 1951r only two will work..still work in progress...later on I'll order from hical and get them to cut and thread barrel..no purchasing for a few months..hopefully..lol
I sent an email to cabelas telling them of my experience and they want to talk maybe tomorrow.
I guess it's my fault for not checking when I ask if it had a spring loaded pin...guess I have to tread most sales people like they don't know and not take their word and make them show me ...
Glenn.

oh interesting.
the second one actually has a stamp on the barrel that reads made in russia and my first one doesn't...barrel looks cleaner in second one too..

Ok so finally got my photos of new rifle

first one is the stamping on the barrel just under gas tube , my first sks doesn't have this at all and the textures between the two are different. first one is gritty compaired to the newer one..
even the bolt is coated on the 2nd one..
any thoughts
Glenn.

Russian export marking on the barrel, thats all.

One of your rifles could be blued, while the other finish is "BBQ" paint.

oh good to know
thank you
kinda like the bbq finish
the barrel is in far batter shape then my first one so this has taken its place a main rifle, only thing is did not switch the gas tubes out as the first one doesnt sit well in the wood cover

Your rifle was technically made in 2014 haha it just a loop hole they use . Exporting military rifles from Russia is illegal so they remanufacture them as sporting rifles

so my 1951r sks is actually from 2014?
really?
no
was out at the range yesterday and found that it shoots differently then my first one, first one made a different sound kinda hard to discribe.
either way still fun to shoot even though I need alot of work
