Made it out yesterday for y second try at trap. Switched from IC to modified choke and went up to a 1345fps load from and 1140fps load.

My first time I was getting 3-5/25, with the new setup I went up to 10-15/25 clays hit. Any other suggestions to improve or is it just practice, practice, practice from here out?

for there is no substitute for practice (but this is what it's all about !!), that being said, I like the 1200FPS loads and only use a full choke for trap. unless you are "on them" right out of the house, your IC and MOD chokes will spread out too much if you're letting the bird get out there aways, hence try a round or two with a full and see what you think. whats the worst that could happen ?.......you had to shoot another round !!

Coaching coaching coaching.

You can't buy a solution here, despite what some people may tell you. Get someone who knows what they are doing to help you and get out practicing correctly.

Brad.

I shot my first round of trap with a full choke because that's what all the old guys said they were using. I think i hit maybe 8 or 9 for the round. Then a DIFFERENT old guy at the club told me to try shooting with a modified choke. I did, and promptly saw my score jump to the mid teens.

Using a more open choke when you're just starting WILL help you because you will hit a couple more shooting a bigger pattern. The ones that don't break because they're out at 40 yards, well, you weren't going to hit those anyway regardless of choke, so it's not such a big deal. Once you top out at around 18-22 for your score for a round, switch back to a full, or if you have one, Improved Modified. You'll still be hitting the close ones that you can get on quickly, because you've gotten better, and the tighter choke will help you hit the ones further out. I shoot an IM for trap now, and usually average about 22-23. I can't bring myself to shoot full just yet.

On a lighter note, one of the guys on my league team (our AA shooter) got his full choke stuck in his gun after dropping it in the drink out hunting or something. Shot for 3/4 of league season with a full choke, and shot more than one clean 25/25 round of skeet with it in :O

Oh, and watch these videos, they're pretty good :)

Definitely use at least a modified, IC is way to open for trap, I'd use the standard 1140 fps shells with #7.5 shot. or #8's No sense beating yourself up with unnecessary recoil.

You could switch to a full choke, especially if you are letting the targets get along ways away from you. But I'd stick with the mod at 16 yards.

Remember to keep the gun moving the target is always either rising or falling, if you are shooting late and it;s going down, remember you need to lead it down.

Best to get it on the way up!

You also need to lead it left and right, so when you get those hard crossers, make sure you are on the leading edge in the direction that they are going. Not pointing directly at them.

Remember you need to shoot where they are going to be, not where they are, because by the time the shot gets there, it will be where it WAS!

Those videos that were posted look good, a truly experienced coach, as Brad mentioned would be excellent if you want to be truly proficient.

Figure out some consistent hold points for the 5 spots.

Play around with your lead. Trap is 90% knowing where the lead is while the bird is flying and 10% being able to point the gun at that point and pull the trigger.

At the local club it is mostly M or IM choke at 16yards. I started with M but found myself thinking that I had a proper lead but the bird didn't break on some of the longer shots, so I switched to IM and have been happy with that. Important to trust that the gun will break the clay if you do your job.

Thanks everyone for the advise and videos.
Might switch down to an IM choke once I feel I am consistent with the M. Also great advise to lead DOWN when shooting late, I suspect that has cost me some shots.
Looks like practice, practice, practice for the next few months. Any suggestions on coaches in the GTA?
