So I have a 2x4 with a big nail in the end and I want to go moose hunting, I suppose I could go out and buy a rifle, but that could cost me over $100 and I am really ####ing cheap. Does the 2x4 have enought knock down power? what about Sectional Density?

Should I Use Fur? Cedar? maybe some good ol' Prince George Spruce?

what size nail should i use?

my uncle has been killing moose with his 2x4 for year, but I think It might not be enough?

should I get one of those new WSLs? Weather-proof Short Laminates? I know they are astill 2x4 but they are 3x as much as spruce and everyone says they kill better....

So do I varnish my 2x4 of Paint it? these seem to be important considerations

should I go with a Ardox Spike? maybe a Concrete nail? so many choices.

oh! my last question, is my 2x4 with a nail in it good for bear defence? I hear my uncles brother's sisters ### pools man said his first nations, landed imigrant adopted brother in law killed a bear with a 2x4 with NO NAIL! can you belive that ####? wow, so I should be alright with a big nail in the end of my 2x4

should I put a red dot scope on my 2x4? maybe get it fluted? what is the efective range of a 2x4.

I live in Southern Ontario and have never seen a bear, but when I'm walking through the corn, I think they are watching me, all the other ontario bear experts tell me so. but they've never seen one either. they said i should get a 6x6, a 2x4 won;t be enough

somebody help me please!!!!

2x4? That is way overkill. I suggest a broom-handle as it is easier to control and will allow better hit placement, plus it is lighter so you can have a longer one, which naturally increases effective range.

I think you would be better off with hardwood, then if you ever draw that elusive once in a lifetime Shiras moose tag in the US they won't charge you any import duties on your weapon.

you might be able to kill it through the eye with a sharpened popsicle stick. I have personally taken down some huge bears with this method...

2x4 for game

That 2x4 can be awkward in close quarters, I would go for the "Wrist Rocket" slingshot with at least a 45 caliber ball bearing.:) Be sure you're within 10 yards to be real effective. And with a well placed shot you can reload the ball after diggin' it out of the animals skull.:p

I guess you could ask yourself what theory you belong to.

Light and fast I would go with the broom stick

Slow and heavy I would go with a baseball bat

Moderate and moderate I would stick with a nice hickory axe handle.

But thats only half the battle. what type of nail are you going to use.
I personally would go with a 6" spike for maximum penetration, sectional density and ballistic coefficient.

IMO of course.

Now...are you planning on the nail being positioned longtitudinally...or laterally?..Makes a big difference, or so I'm told....If you go longtitudinally (OK, guys, this is with the nail straight into the end) you'll be safe with the spiral type nail....it'll pull right out when ol' bullwinkle gets to moving, which he no doubt will when he gets a spike in him,...you would too:D My concern is with the spiral type nail positioned laterally (OK, guys, this is the nail driven into the side of the 2x4) you may not have the proper release when, as I mentioned before "ol' bullwinkle gets to moving"....which he will. Maybe if you have enough "wrist action",,..remember when it was all in the wrist action?..you could get "unhooked" before you meet a 10" spruce face to face....I'd forego the lanyard on this arrangement myself. No point in giving your hand a place to hang up...done properly I think it'll work. Another option would be to anchor the 2x4 to the quad with say 50 feet of 3/4" nylon rope or 5/16 cable. As soon as you get him hooked(use the spiral spike on this routine), hop on the Honda and nail it(sorry, bad pun:D )....600 lbs of Foreman 500 outta slow him up enough to allow your buddy (do not try this alone) get up along side him and cut his throat.

You could try putting, say, maybe 100 nails in the 2x4, then maybe you could have him tenderized before you get him to the truck:D Roofing nails should work for this setup. You'll have to glue them on though.

All in all, I think a good 8 footer will do, or even "stud length" if'n an real 8 footer isn't avaliable. The 10 and 12 footers may have more reach and more "knock down" power but they are harder to handle in heavy brush. Keep it light and short...sort of a Mountain 2x4 , if you will:D

good luck

Your fear of corn is obvious Phib... scarecrows are coming for you.

somebody help me please!!!!

I have consulted the experts.... it seems that you are beyond help... sorry about your luck.:D

2X4??!!

I hate using that modern technology and this is the main reason you A-holes have given the antis ammo to attack our hunting seasons!

Use a natural hardwood and fireharden it, forget the nail, you don't need it with proper placement !
Just make sure the end of the stick is very sharp and put it where it counts.
Too many of us are taking the easy way out, and I firmly believe that this is the reason the Spring bear hunt was cancelled in Ontario..........

2x4 with nail??

There have already been a plethora of pertinent suggestions but i, too feel somehow compelled to add mine:

Chopsticks and a cork.

The cork is your backup method.

Outperforms the traditional beer cap.

No, we're not bored silly because of the off-season... I'm going to go see if any of my trigger lock keys interchange!

For bears :

Dig a deep hole (big enough to take the whole bear) and cover the bottom of the hole with the ashes from your burned 2x4 ( and it should be made of FIR not FUR ). Open a can of peas and distribute them loosely on top of the ashes. When the bear gets to hole and bends over to take a pea, kick him in the ash- hole. Very sporting. As for moose, any old old large caliber gun will do nicely. Just make a good shot.

You only need to wear that blaze orange cap (with the propeller on top) when moose hunting with the 2x4, don't you?
