It's completely an advertising piece for them, but wouldn't a .50BMG also accomplish this, with more potential for better accuracy? Just wondering.

Just to help clarify what kind of distance we are talking about, a 3,600-yard shot is the same length as 36 football fields … and over two miles away.

On September 28th, 2014 a team from Hill Country Rifles joined with expert instructors from FTW Ranch to attempt a 3600 yard shot onto a 36” steel target. At more than 2 miles, it will take the bullet a full 7.2 seconds to reach the target.

New Jersey native Jim Spinella is not a stranger to long distance shooting, but this shot would be a new personal record. One that few would ever consider attempting.

Rifle: Hill Country Rifles Custom 375 CheyTac
Optics: Schmidt & Bender 5-25X56mm PM-2 scope
Distance: 3606.41 Yards (2.049 Miles)
Target: 36” circular steel plate
Altitude: 2000 ft.
Temp: 70 degrees
Elevation: 60.2 mil (26.8 in rail, 22.6 in turret, 10.8 hold over)
Windage: 3.5 mil left

When you pull off a shot like that, you pretty much get bragging rights until you die.

That is some serious distance and impressive for any shooter. Well done guys, we can’t wait to see what’s next!

From larger 7mms to 50 BMG can reach out to these distances. Obviously, bigger bullet and case just makes the process so much easier.

338 boomers have been shooting well beyond 1 mile for a very long time.

I took a 6.5 Mystic 140gr Berger VLD do a GPS ranged 2340yds. A 223 with 80gr Amax to 1 mile. I will be taking my 308 to a mile this season.

The 375 cal advantage is the Sierra bullets offered. Quality match bullets really determine the result. The 50BMG has had very good LR accuracy lately and options are starting to get better in Canada.

408 Chey tac I fired years back, made 1450yds a chip shot. I am sure a properly set up 416 Barrett would reach way out too.

With alot of elevation, they all work.

There will be a couple more 408's or 375-408's in the works this year.

PS... pity they didn't shoot any more at that gong.

That time lag is really cool. I was shooting .308 out to 1200m on Friday. And that 2 to 2-1/2 second delay lets you re-aquire the target and see the hit or splash. Very cool without a spotter!

What would be the best action for the 408cheytac? repeater and single shoot?.

Depends on what you are trying to do..... the options are very limited as only a handful of custom action makers will even look at this large of a case.

It really doesn't matter whether you go single or repeater for this type of rifle.

Im more interested in how they got such a precise range then the shot it self.

GPS ranging is effective to within a few yds with the right gear.

I have an optical rangefinder that is accurate to around 2% at that distance. There are newer laser rangefinders that can range that far... but mostly tied to military gear.

Given how far that is, if they were out on their actual distance by a bit, would it really matter.... 3600 or 3550yds is still a long ways out.
