I'm looking at picking up a Weatherby Vangaurd S2 in the 7mm08 and you can get the "Redfield package" with the gun. It's a 3-9 x 42mm Redfield Revenge scope. I can't seem to find any reviews on the scope and I'm wondering from others experience if I'd be better off buying just the gun and a different scope or the package deal?

It's a $150 scope at SAIL (Google refield Revenge), and it's pretty decent glass. If the package vs non is more then that get the non.
I have one on my Vanguard .243 and other then the narrow FOV it's a good scope, made in the Philippines at least.

I also put one (Redfield Revenge) on my VGII (243).

I opted for the accu-ranger model. Otherwise the same, 3-9X42. I chose it over bushnell's and nikon's in the same price range when I looked through all of them at the same outing.

The one in the "pkg" is the standard duplex.

It is also mounted with Talley lightweight mounts (ring/base combo). That's a 50-55 buck value right there and they are probably the best mounts to use on the Vanguards.

I also have a 7.08 Vanguard II (sporter model). On that one I wanted slightly better glass than on my 243 so I went with a Burris E1 (300 buck range) - better clarity by a good bit over the Redfield.

So depends what you want to use the rifle for and what it would cost to put "something else" on the rifle.

If the bare rifle is within about 150 bucks of the scoped version, then you are getting a deal and the glass is "half decent".

Would I buy another Redfield Revenge scope - yes probably if I was looking for glass at it's pricepoint - if that's the criteria they are tough to beat.
