I've run milsurp rifle shoots and tac-rifle shoots but I've never organized a three gun event. Since I live in the boonies there's no where around I can even go to see one.

I'm looking for a rule set and how-to's/best practices for a fun, simple, one-day event. Can anyone point me in the right direction or make suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

Stevo go to idpaforums.com and have a look there they are working on a set of rules that encompass IDPA type scenarios

I've looked at them. Way more detailed/complex than what I'm hoping for. No chance for any use of tactical gear either.

Send me a phone number and I'll give you a call. I've put on a few.

Will do.

I could tell ya, but it'll cost ya :D

I'm cheap, so I guess your knowledge will go unshared.;)

It's really not that difficult... I do it and well, I'm an idiot.

It's really easy to design and set up a kick-ass multigun match, but keep in mind the more complex the stages are the longer it's gonna take shooters/squads to move through them...
Stage instructions should be simple....
Scoring scheme should be simple. ie Hit/miss... or limiting the # of shots to be fired at each target...
There are lots of things you can do to make a great match... One 3-gun club I shoot at typically runs it's matches with round counts as high as 200 pistol, 100 rifle, 50 birdshot, 5 slugs and 10 buckshot... They run five/six stages and can get 40+ shooters through in about 6 hrs.... 'sometimes less.

Thanks for the info, 667. I've run single gun (rifle and pistol) events so I can come up with stages that work.

Some of the stuff I was wondering about:

Are shooters required to carry all their kit (3 guns/ammo/etc) for every stage? I see lots of pics that seem to show this?

Do your shoots allow any type of tac gear, or is it done like the IDPA multigun?

What type of start positions are used? IE: low ready, rifle racked, etc

depends, for IPSC you can only carry one gun at a time... other 3 gun ive seen people lug around all three. I have never shot a mixed stage...which I think would be alot of fun.. transition from rifle to handgun than to shotgun or something like that...

That's up to you as match grand poo-bah... 'Depends on how fit your pool of shooters are...:D Trooper Class at the Cav. Arms matches require shooters to carry all their stuff, but.... how many sissy's do you have come out to your matches who could actually do it...?:D
Safety-wise you should run stages with the lowest common denominator in mind. There are many shooters out there who despite their training/ experience cannot be trusted to transition from one gun to another safely.
If more than one gun is to be used in a stage try having a spot where the shooter stages his 2nd/3rd gun and just picks it up when he gets there.

Multi gun matches are pretty much wide open... 'some clubs discourage or ban overly "tactical"(I hate that word) outfits, but that's up to yours.
Keep in mind though.... all that .mil gear looks cool, but it isn't always fast. And this is a game where speed counts....

Whatever you as match Dir. decide. As long as it's safe. Usually rifles are chamber empty, bolt closed, mag in at the start of the stage. You're under RO's orders so it's completly safe...

Check out http://www.cavalryarms.com/competition/trooper.html for some good ideas... Their matches rock!
