I was throwing around some ideas around with some other shooters last night for ideas for next years matches. One idea was a 3 gun match with red rifles. You can use any pistol and shotgun, but must use a red rifle, SKS, SVT, Vz-58, etc. I am trying to gauge what sort of attendance we would get for a red rifle match.

If your club ran a 3 gun red rifle match, would you attend?

If you normally shoot three gun with a black gun, AR, etc would being required to use a red rifle discourage you from participating?

If you haven't shot 3 gun before, would using red rifles encourage you to give 3 gun a try since you don't need to invest in anything more than a SKS and the playing field might be a little more even?

Looking for feedback positive and negative (hopefully not too negative), fire away.

Lots of the AR guys don't have red rifles so that may limit your potential attendees.

Why not just have a red division? Other than VZs with AR mag conversions everyone will be running 5 round guns and the playing field would be reasonably level within that division.

We have guys running JP ARs and SKSs side-by-side at our matches in the same division. The guys with the VZs and SKSs still have a great time, and the VZs can crack the top 10 with a good shooter.

I have to agree with Stevo, a good number of AR 3gunners may not own a red rifle so having a Red division might make more sense.

Another thing to consider in a match like this is whether or not most of your shooters will be shooting steel core ammo. This is an important consideration as many clubs (practically all around my area) have banned this ammo. If your club hasn't banned it, you still need to consider the types of rifle targets you'd like to have at your match...steel rifle targets may not be ideal for a match where the majority of the shooters would be shooting surplus steel core ammo.

your event sounds pretty interesting and fun, I see a funny paradigm of posts coming on it. hope your turn out is good and you guys have fun! post some vids of the day and pics of your set-up!

+1 to everything said below

If you are going to do it then I would just make it paper/clays only... even if you disallow steel core ammo some jackarse is going to ignore the rules and use it anyway.

I'm sure most shooters have/or know of an sks they could dig up and blow the dust off of. With the pistol and shotgun part though I think having any pistol or shotgun is reasonable, or if someone had a red shotgun they might be willing to let competitors use if they provide ammo that is.

Mmmmmm Saaaaiiiigaaaaa... One can only dream

Thanks for the input so far. The idea of a Three Gun Red Match was tossed around, but we haven't seen many shooters with red pistols. You see a lot of SKS's and a few other red rifles on the range and there is always a ton of 7.62x39mm casings laying around (sadly). The idea of a Red Rifle division was also considered, but the group I was talking to thought it would be better to make it a Red Rifle match rather than divsion. It may end up being a Red Rifle Division depending on feedback from some of the regular match attenders.

Steel core ammo shouldn't be a problem, we have enough paper, clays, bowling pins, etc to be used for the rifle. We can save the steel for the shotguns and pistols.

We were kind of hoping that a Red Rifle match would encourage some shooters who are not involved in 3 gun but have SKS's to come out and give it a try.

Our club actually has a fairly small 3 gun group when compared to the actual membership and a lot of the regular match attenders are from other clubs. Trying to boost some more interest from our own membership.

More like a nightmare....
Unless you sink a wack of money and work into a saiga.... they're a POS jam-o-matic at best.

That's a platform I wouldn't mind sinking a bit of cash into as it has great potential. The problem is that where I'm going, they start at $1500 and THEN you gotta invest $$$ into them. I'll probably just go with an 870 to start with :p

We are in the exact same situation. 2/3 of our shooters are from out of town. It's not that a large part of the membership don't have the gear, they're just not interested in competing, or they're afraid to be the newbie.

Why not try an SKS shoot just on it's own? Throw in a couple of basic action stages and promote the hell out of your three gun at the same time?

Stevo, we have a limited number of volunteers to put together the scheduled matches so there is a reluctance to add any additional events. We are also throwing around some ideas for running a series of smaller events so people can try out some practical shooting without jumping into a match. If the enjoy the training day/clinic and get enough out of it then maybe they will turn up for the matches.

I'm from the Hat and I'd be into a Red division. It would be nice if we could set aside an area at the range where we could shoot are shotguns and I would be willing to donate some cash to help.

Well with $150,000 plus more dollars we should be able to build a designated multidiscipline shooting area with a few bells and whistles, if you don't have that around I would suggest buying and helping sell raffle tickets. Every bit helps, including volunteers to help run the matches.

I work up in Fort Mac, but when I have a chance to help out I would be more than happy. PM me if I can help in any way.
