Am I correct in thinking that magazines in the US don't get neutered like they do in Canada?

If so what do Canadians do when competing in a 3 gun match there?

Pretty big disadvantage if the locals have much larger capacity mags (I`ve seen PMAGs with 40 round capacity compared to our lowly 10 round pistol mags)

I don't compete of take firearms to the US, but could you borrow or rent mags while there, or at worst buy and store full capacity mags in the US? Having friends in the US would make this a lot easier.

If you go to the US with a bunch of riveted 30 round magazines, you unrivet them at the match, run full cap mags and then re rivet at the end of the match.

Just know which States that you can use them in, and that includes transporting them through.

NY is a bust.

If you have an AR with a collapsible stock, removable flash hider, bayonet lug, it's a no go, you can't even transport through either.

This is VERY important info.

Many Canadians think all of USA is "gun friendly". But that is simply not true.

Plenty of American States have more restrictive gun laws than we have here in Canada.

Well.... There is the federal safe passage act... But I'm not sure that means much to NY

You have to start from outside the state, not stop for overnight, and end outside of the state for it to be 'ok'.

Now, accounts from US folks say the the NY authorities don't give a fk about the federal act, and they'll still stop/confiscate/jail you.

If the state your going is hi cap friendly, then buy the mags where your shootingnand sell it after the match, or rent a storage and leave all your gears, that is if your that frequent competing in the same state.

I guess I could do that (already have all the tools)

It'll be pretty heartbreaking to put those rivets back in after having a taste of how magazines should be but I'm sure I`d get quite the welcoming party when I come back to Kanada if I didn't.......

Thanks for the heads up but it shouldn't be an issue as I only plan to go to matches within reasonable driving distance of the Okanagan

NY sounds a little Liberal on the gun front for my taste......

So what should I buy? I'm thinking PMAGS

Someone has already mentioned 30 rounders but I notice they do a 40 rounder too - or are they too heavy/cumbersome when loaded up?

Or are their better options?

Is 3 enough?

I'm shooting a match in Utah next month. One of the LGS has 30 round PMags for $12.30 each. I figure 3 will do for the match and for less than $40 I can afford to give them away or trade them off at the end of the match.

So 40 is good but no less than 30?

The 40 mags are a little bit heavier. Remember, you are carrying them around all day also. They will also interfere more if there are a lot of prone stages.
I would buy the PMAGs and handgun mags down there and either leave them down there with a friend so you can use them again the next time, or sell them off after the match cheap. Or, as mentioned, bring your own 5/30s down and repin them again when you come home.

I have 2x40 and 1x30 Pmag while doing 3gun south of the border. Unless there is some specific reason on the stage for running the shorter 30, I start with the 40 and then have a 30 or 40 on my belt as second/backup mag.

Also keep in mind that you lose reliability if you run Pmags at 100% capacity, or try to insert them on a closed bolt. So I'll basically always down-load the Pmags by 1 or 2.

I`m thinking along the same lines

Full capacity mags is almost enough reason to go hit up a 3 gun event south of the border

Not necessarily.

40’s and 30’s are good but you should also look to add a couple 20’s...maybe doubled up with a coupler, because some rifle stages you could be shooting through a very small tight port that you will have problems maneuvering the longer mags through or around. Or they will have you shooting from an incline like an angled roof top or simulated rooftop prop which you might want to rest your Rifle foreguard on for support, but longer mags get in the way.

Long story short you need different ‘tools’ in your 3 Gun toolbox that you can change up for different stages.
