Anyone using a semi-auto for 3 gun ? I know pumps are the general preference, due to capacity mainly, but I'm wondering how many, if any, are using semi's with any degree of success?

I have a 590 and just bought a Benelli M4, "cause I wanted one ", and could use some encouragement to take it to a 3 gun :D. Tips would help too.

Although I don't use a semi myself I have seen people using them in three gun events with great success. I think it just comes down to practice and being proficient with your reloads. Capacity shouldn't be a huge deal with the M4 though, I'm sure others will chime in to explain how you can "ghost load" an M4 to carry a total of 7 rounds legally.

My advice, get out and use it to become proficient with it and most of all enjoy your purchase.

I have a Remington 1100 that I put a full stock with pistol grip on, a ported 19" barrel with a fibre optic and a +1 mag extension (so the mag holds a total of 5 rounds).
The real issue with a semi in a 3 gun is it is sometimes a great asset and at other times it is a handycap. If its a short burner stage a pump will hold enough rounds so they don't need to reload- you do...
Another issue is some semis are finicky on the ammo they will cycle- pumps aren't fussy.
Yet another issue is a good pump shooter can cycle their action as quick as most semi's so the advantage isn't as large as it may seem.
I found in a three gun (medium to large stage) the winner isn't decided by who's the quickest to empty the gun but by the guy who can load it the quickest. You may save hundredths shooting it but your spending seconds loading it.
Another advantage of the hi capacity pump is they may have more options on where to reload in a stage than you do.
That said, a guy who knows and practices with a semi can still be pretty fast, I never considered mine a liability (note that I have been trying to try my magfed...)
I still believe a mag fed semi with 7 round detachable mags (Dominion style) would have everything else completely stomped (CanAm-hint,hint).

I have both a 590 A1 SPX and a 930 SPX never had a feeding issue with either one (while those around me had FTF's, jams, etc other than a supid moment in time where I loaded a shell in backwards <doi>) and RUPZUK is right on the money.

Knowing and mastering what you are running is key.

I have yet to see someone here locally run a mag feed well, of course with that said, I'd love to see it :) believing something and actually doing it are two different things.

I put this together during some time off for fun and this can give you an idea of what was running on my squad. We had a very good mix

I had all that stuff except for the aluminum magwell, I watched youtube and it looked slick. Then I practiced and practiced and I couldn't get it to work 100% of the time, I was messing it up about 30% of the time in practice (dry) and about 50% of the time in practice (hot). I found the concept to be very finicky and the plactic magwell it came with was too flexy, perhaps I should have kept them and got the aluminum magwell but I've yet to see anyone in person run them with any success (mind you I've only seen a few...)
YMMV

Semi is the way to go when mag cap laws don't apply..
Unless you're in heavy metal div. Where pump only is mandatory....
At 3-gun matches in the states youll see several types of semis... I like the box fed saiga, but it's prohib here.
The XRail system can bump capacity up to over 20 rounds in a tube fed shotty...

That is why the company that invented the idea stoped making it, no one could get it to run perfect 100% of the time.
If a great idea for a game gun but i nthe heat of the moment it seems the shooter will allways push to hard and have a jam.
for high cap on a semi box mags are the way to go.

Where did you get the 930 SPX??? I was under the impression Mossberg hasn't been exporting them to Canada yet

Michael Voigt, the Pan American Shotgun Championship Open Winner, ran an Rem 1100 with the Speed loader in question.

The Box fed shotguns, Saiga's and the like, ran like crap, finicky magazines, unless one spent an inordinate amount of money redoing a $500 gun. One company, R and R charged somewhere around $3000 US to make a box fed Saiga run with any kind of consistency, that is without mags...

They've been here for quite some time already.

My particular example was from Milarm, they had a small quantity available for purchase (but they had to remove the +2 extensions before selling, even though they are listed in the RCMP database as a '7 shot shotgun' better safe than sorry) I added the plus two extension from S&J hardware to retain it's nicely balanced looks.

Your best bet would be to contact Milarm to see if they are getting any more in or if they even have any.

I've seen them time to time come up in the EE, but you have to have the money in the pocket to be fast enough to get them.

Personally, I love my 930, after it's initial break in, it runs EVERYTHING.

I mounted one 4 round shotshell stripper upside down on the 930 forend along with a side saddle, hopefully this will help facilitate the quick reloads.

No new 930 SPX's coming in anytime soon from Mossberg. They must be shipped to Canada without the +2 extension and Mossberg has refused to ship them in that configuration.
