well this is the summer im going to try 3-gun.

Looking for a shotgun thats not too expensive (~1000$ or less).

i was thinking a stoeger m3k, but its only 3" chamber rather than 3.5 of the m3500 which would put me in a disadvantage in Canada (~ 1 less capacity)

I love my M3K...Entering our third 3Gun season together with no issues...And I have not found the 3" chamber to be a noticeable disadvantage...add a Matchsaverz and a mag extension and you are good to go.

get a versa max sportsman then send it to Tac ord once you want upgrades

I iwas looking at their site earlier... my only issue is If I want to be bale to bring this gun back and forth from USA to Canada it MUST be of US ownership... Don't think I can get a canadian gun to USA without paying 250$ extra + % points on cost of gun all in USD of course.

Probably would end up with a m3k, unless I can find an amazing deal on a canadian gun (EE?) probably will end up with a m3k w/ an extension pinned to 5.95 rounds lol.

How do you go about pinning the extension?

I put a stove bolt (1/4" x 3") through my extension end cap, put 2 washers and bolted it on the inside and epoxied it to make it permanent. On a m3k with a nordic +2 extension. Holds 6 2.75", or 5.5 3".

If you get a m3k, contact tactical ordnance for an extension, they were the only ones with the extension (+2) + spring, and stoeger nut in stock. I got the low drag follower as well. Holds 8 at the start (6 tube, 1 chamber, 1 ghost)

I just did it recently, but to strip the gun after adding the extension, you need to remove the tube spring and extension nut to get the barrel off, and reinstall it all when reassembling. One downside.

I don’t understand why you are saying it must be of US ownership?

Drill and pin with a rivet. Put a pencil mark on the face of the extension to locate the rivet under the barrel for better asthetics.

Please excuse my ignorance but why go through all that trouble? Why not just put in a limiting plug? Is it a 3 gun thing? TIA

Tom

Tom the reason you have to go through all that trouble is the law states it has to be a permanent type of plug . If you just put a piece of doweling in there that is not permanent , therefore it would make the shotgun prohib. I am going through the same right now with my M3k .

If the plug can be removed, it turns it prohibited. It holds 6 3" shells without the plug. A +1 extension MIGHT not have needed a plug at all while giving the 6 2.75" capacity, but the plug is $6 to make so I didn't take the risk of buying the extension twice.

It's also on an aftermarket end cap (for the extension kit), so you can swap back to the original spring / end cap for a 4+1 capacity, and use the OEM plug for hunting (2+1?) capacity.

Thank you very much gentlemen! I guess my mindset was back in my hunting days when we had to make sure the removable plug was in before heading out to hunt but was removed when we were just shooting on the range. I knew the five round limit in semi's but I didn't think it through that the ability to remove the plug would make it prohibited not just the actual removal of said plug. ;)

Thanks again!

Tom

Rivets are easily removed , takes me 4 seconds when I’m in the US. Does that make ar 15 mags prohib? Canadian law is based on criminal intent , placing something that blocks the number of shells that can be used is enough. I’d like to see the crown and rcmp lab try to function test a short spring in a long extension, would be a good laugh in court. Versamax shotguns take rem 870 pump extensions btw and that’s a whole another can of worms. Versamax shotguns also have a 3.5 inch receiver that allows 5 3.5 shells in the tube or 7 ,2 3/4 shells plus 1 ghost loaded and 1 in the chamber for a total of 9 rounds to start.

Difference is the rivet requires a tool. Where when a threaded nut does not require a tool. If you can stake the nut on the bolt you should be good to go as you require a tool to unmodify.

(4) A cartridge magazine described in subsection (1) that has been altered or re-manufactured so that it is not capable of containing more than five or ten cartridges, as the case may be, of the type for which it was originally designed is not a prohibited device as prescribed by that subsection if the modification to the magazine cannot be easily removed and the magazine cannot be easily further altered so that it is so capable of containing more than five or ten cartridges, as the case may be.

(5) For the purposes of subsection (4), altering or re-manufacturing a cartridge magazine includes

(a) the indentation of its casing by forging, casting, swaging or impressing;

(b) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a steel or aluminum casing, the insertion and attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or aluminum, as the case may be, or of a similar material, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method; or

(c) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a casing made of a material other than steel or aluminum, the attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or of a material similar to that of the magazine casing, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method or by applying a permanent adhesive substance, such as a cement or an epoxy or other glue.

And the M3k starts with 8 for 1/2 the price and 1/2 a lb lighter than a versa max (tactical).

Currently I run a Beretta 1301 Comp.
Great gun, love it.
But at the OP’s price point I would like to try a 590 DM.
If you can get the 5, 10 & 20 round mags it could offer a lot for a pump.
Might work well?

Was already thinking a 590a1, but I want a semi auto lol
This way when I start shooting 3gun in USA (don't have an AR in USA). I can just get another extension and go nuts.
