It may seem like a pretty n00bish question, but I have the following questions about the guns used in 3-guns IPSC.

Are there divisions like for pistols such as Production, Standard, Open, etc?

Do I have to use a self-loading rifle, or could I use, absurd example, my .44Mag Winchester 94? If so, could I load it to full capacity of will I have to load 5+1 to keep even with semis?

Same question for shotguns about capacity, If I use a pump, could I load 8 rounds, or would I need to load 5+1 to keep even with semis?

Thanks

It depends on the club. Not all clubs put on IPSC sanctioned 3 gun matches. In my club, any thing goes as long as it is safe. Safety is the major concern not which toys your using. We hand out Plaques for 1st to 7th overall, then plaques for Novice, single action/blackpowder, female, etc. I've shot a match with an AR 15, Mossberg shotgun and a Colt Gov't Model. Next match I shot it with a Marlin M1894S, Winchester M97 and a Ruger Vaquero. While it takes longer to shoot a 3 gun match with Cowboy guns, if the Range Officers are progressive and patient, you'll have a fun match.

Go to the ipsc website and read the online rule books for shotgun and rifles. They will explain everything in detail about the different categories. Clubs might have an anything goes informal match where semis and manual actions compete against each other.
