Have any of you ever had a Gentry or Pacific Tool 3-postions safety fitted to a Rem 700?
In addition to the cost of the unit, what did the charge to do the fitting and cocking piece/pin milling?

Thanks!

I don't remember which brand, but I paid a reportedly good Calgary gunsmith a goodly amount of money to put one on my stainless 700 in .375H&H.

When I picked it up, he said, "be careful, it doesn't block the sear." I found out what he meant later: if you had it in the middle position and bumped the trigger, it would fire when you moved the safety to the "off" position. My poor cousin, even after an appropriate 'modified safety briefing' was wandering the back 40 and it went off, drilling a cone-shaped hole 12" in diameter and 18" deep, and peeling a good amount of his right thumbtip off.

Do your diligence...

I guess the "good Calgary Gunsmith" is not so good.

The Remington safety does not block the sear. It will work as long as you don't adjust the trigger too light. If the trigger is adjusted too light, if the trigger is touched with the safety on, it may fire when safety is pushed off. If it is the older style action, and you haven't already done so, grind down the end of the little tab that locks the action when the safety is on so you can cycle the action with safety on.

WHY ? would you want one ? the stock Remington safety works perfectly fine and is Easy to use ! jmo RJ

The rem safety is indeed fine as it does prevent the firing pin from moving by stopping the sear from dropping under the cocking piece (as you likely know). However, on a hunting rifle I don't think that you can easily improve on the M98, Win 70 or even Ruger Mkii style safety's. A substantial piece of steel that mechanically blocks the forward travel of the striker/pin is just superior in my opinion. The only way to better it is with a decocking safety like we see Blaser, Merkel, Sauer, Voere et al using.

I certainly abide by the mantra that I and my gun-manners are the primary safety and while don't rely on the mechanical device as my first line of safety when carrying in 'Condtion 1' in the field, the mechanical block is my preference if I can have it.

If you want a 3 position safety, buy a rifle with a 3 position safety. Retrofitting a device to do something it wasn't designed to do is a bit foolish. Like the guy that flew his piston-Otter to flight level 30. There are better platforms for that job.
