3 round limit for hunting

I just picked up my Migratory game bird permit/stamp and with it came a brief summary of some hunting regulations. It mentions the regulation pertaining to the 3 round capacity as follows;

"No person shall hunt a migratory game bird with a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined unless the capacity of the gun has been reduced to three shells by altering or plugging the magazine with a one-piece metal, plastic or wooden filler that cannot be removed unless the gun is disassembled."

This regulation specifically mentions migratory game birds. Does anyone know if the 3 round limit applies to deer hunting as well? I would like to know if I can take the plug out of my Browning BPS and load up with 5 slugs when hunting deer?

In Ontario the 3 round total limit applies whatever you're hunting. varies by province

These birds are covered by Federal international regulations, and have their origins in conservation measures. Deer are covered by provincial regulations. You'll have to read that synopsis to see if there are magazine capacity restrictions, but I doubt you'll be in trouble.

If you are out in any of the controlled deer hunts in Southern Ontario with a shotgun,and are checked by a CO, the first thing he is going to check is to see how many shells your gun holds. If it holds more than three, you're in trouble.

of Canada you cannot possess any clip/magazine that holds
more than five shots for a semi-automatic centre fire rifle
unless that clip/magazine has been specifically exempted
pursuant to the Firearms Regulations."

That's friggin stupid. Migratory, I understand, but what about grouse hunts? Or slug guns?

I stand corrected, three shotgun shells regardless of open season. And there goes my one mistake for the month of August. I'll have to be especially careful until Labour Day, since there is a family roadtrip vacation coming up. Don't want to go into mistake-debt with the codriver giving me instructions.

Same here on PEI, I was told here it was done that way just to simplify the regs as 90% of our hunting is Migratory birds.

In New Brunswick there is a 3 round limit for migratory birds. However that does not hold true for Woodcock. In NB there is no round limit for upland hunting. Woodcock is a migratory bird but is an upland bird as far as DNR is concerned -- they have an agreement with the feds. No limit on center fire rifles also -- but who wants to carry around copius amounts of ammo --- more in the mag means more weight to tote - us old fellers like light weight guns in the deer woods

Woodcock is treated as Upland here as well (ie lead shot ok) but of course we still have our 3 shot rule regardless.

In sask. I was told we only need the 3 round plug when hunting duck and upland birds, otherwise no limit.
