Well, I find myself in a rather enviable position of having 3 quality scopes either on my shelf or on the way to me and only one rifle currently needing glass. Actually the rifle hasn't even finished being built yet but I like to be prepared :D .

Rifle will be a lightweight .270 Wby Mag built on a Rem 700 action w/ Talley lightweight rings/base.

Scopes I have or will have within the next 2 weeks are as follows. I will most likely list the 2 I don't need for sale in the EE once I've decided. The first one is a quality scope but not up to the standards of the other two so it will be the first to be sold most likely. I'd love to be able to buy 2 more rifles to mount these scopes on but the build on the .270 Wby is going to drain my gun fund for the foreseeable future.

1) Leupold Vari-X II 2-7x33, Gloss, duplex reticle (most likely to be sold off first for obvious reasons). Excellent used condition.

2) Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36, Matte, duplex reticle. Also excellent used condition.

3) Kahles AH 2-7x36, Matte, plex reticle. Brand spanking new in box.

I've never had the opportunity to use a Kahles scope so am pretty excited about this one. If the difference between the VX-III and the Kahles is minimal I'll most likely sell off the Kahles as it is the more expensive of the two and also is NIB so should command a higher resale price over the used Leupy. However, the thought of topping off my custom made beauty with a top-quality scope like a Kahles really has me salivating so I'm up in arms.

Any advice or experience with the Kahles? Worth the extra $$$ over the VX-III or sell it and keep the Leupy?

keep the Khales.

Sell all the leupys.

Nothing like a good scope on a good rifle. No one will ever ask you:
- what scope's that?
- a leupod !
- what kind? I heard they are good, but a buddy of mine..... Do you like it?

If you have a Khales.....
-What scope is that
- Khales
- oooohhh!.... Nice

end of conversation.
Sorry for the screenplay, but ... you will not regret keeping it.

Would be my choice, don't know s**t about the Kellogs brand:D

I'm not too familiar with the Kahles either except by reputation. Although cost isn't always a determiner in most things, in optics it seems to be a pretty good indication of quality as a rule. The $1050.00 price tag at Wholesale speaks volumes plus the fact it's made in Austria. Should be here in a couple of days and will open er up and have look :D . Might also post a seperate thread looking for some first-hand info on the scope.

Thanks for the input so far guys :) .

In that spot right now... spares on hand are a NIB matte Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm, used/excellent Bushnell Elite 3200 10x mil-dot, and a NIB Bushnell Legend 5-15x40mm mil-dot.

Only rifle sitting with rings on it without a scope right now is a Tikka 595 blued/synthetic in .308 Win. Will probably get the Leupold... ;)

And I'm sure other rifles needing scopes will be coming sooner or later...

My problem is I just can't be happy with what I've got. Had originally earmarked the Vari-X II for the rifle in question. Then along came the VX-III and I thought to myself, hey my new rifle deserves the best so i bought it. Then I come across the Kahles at a reasonably decent price and again, might as well buy one of the best, right? Now, 3 scopes and only 1 rifle to put it/them on.

I think it might be a disease. I have a Rem 700 HB .243 that I sold the scope off of last year. I've got an excellent NIB Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 with ballistic-plex reticle sitting on the shelf ready to mount. Then a couple of days ago I went and bought a VX-III LR 6.5-20x40 with Varmint hunters reticle instead  . Like I even have any varmints in the Lwr Mainland to actually shoot at  . Once again, 1 rifle and 2 fine scopes.

Somebody help me, I think I've got a problem  .

I helped you out,you no longer own the 2x7 Leupy :D DAN>>>

I'd go with whichever is the lightest of the bunch. (assuming this is going to be used for hunting.) You do need a robust and quality scope, but for hunting you do not need a target quality one. If the zero slips an eighth of an inch - who cares?

The choice is between nearly the best and the best that most working stiffs can afford. Keep the kahles.

As for the "extra scope(s)" They are not extras cause you are going to buy more rifles. Don't sell em cause you will just be buying them back new again at a premium.

True enough, but then again I don't REALLY need a custom rifle for hunting either... but I REALLY want one :D .

Yep, I think the Kahles it will be. Watch for the VX-III in the EE shortly.

As for keeping them all, the rifle build isn't allowing me a whole lot of extra toys on the shelves right now so can't really afford to sit on them :( .

Now if you'll take 425 for the 2.5-8, I can save you all this torment....your decision will be made for you!

Ryan

That's a smokin deal you've got your gloss one listed at Ryan, should go pretty quick. I'll let mine go for $475.00 but that's about it. :)
