Howdy Folks,

I am a new user and enjoy goose hunting. I am looking for a new shotgun and I am a lefty. So finding a shotgun which works for me is a bit of a challenge. My question today is, does 3.5" chamber really make a difference or does it destroy the patterns. How much more range do you get?

i'm not convinced that 3" or 3.5" actually increases range. they have more shot pellets which make them a more effective shell at normal ranges. that being said, at thirty yards on a giant canada goose 2 3/4 " steel #2 or BB's are practically as deadly. a good gun for a lefty is the BPS or ithaca mod.37 since they have both bottom load and eject. the shooter pulling the trigger is more of a determing factor than the shell length

Have had a 3.5" for 7 years, have I needed it shooting geese, probably not ,but it is the old SIZE does matter :p:p

hard to beat the versitility of a 3.5 i shoot a mossburg, tang safety is left hand friendly. good value for the money.freedom ventures has them in stock.

12magnum knows his stuff!!! Just to add to that ,3.5's won't necessarily ruin pattern........but it's not pattern you should worry about.........steel (if that's what your shooting) patterns tight....but....only effective to 30-35 yds depending on shot size (eg.BB or T)...3.5's do NOT give you more range, they only give volume...but....you need velocity....typically the smaller volumes (eg. 1 1/4 of BB) will give you higher velocities than any 3.5.......... therefore 2 3/4's and 3" steel BB,s at 30 yds or T at 35yds will fill your limit no problems!!!! In my humble opinion 3.5 super mags are a sales gimmick....save your money and buy a left hand or bottom eject 3".....trust me.:)

3.5 inch shells are the magnums of the shotgun world, they may lead to a clean kill 3-5% of the time more than 3 inch shells. The upside to 3.5 inch shells is that you can have more pellets for a bigger pattern, also some people say that you can go down a shot size or two when using 3.5inch shells as the pellet numbers make up for the lose in weight.

Another thing you should keep in mind is the increase in recoil. I have a browning semi and the recoil is greatly increased when you jump into the 3.5" shells. I find that after three shots I can hardly move my arm. Not a good thing when you may use a box or two each hunting session. Find the 3" shells much more managable.

Suggust shooting someone's 3.5" and see how you like it.

If upland game is your primary use, you may want to look at the semi 10 ga. Much easier to shoot with impressive range, and increased shot patterns.

i have a 3.5"....rem express super mag. I love the gun...but, i really don't use the 3.5 very often. Even for geese i generally just use 3's. It is nice to have the versatility, however.
