Hi, I am considering rifle in 30-06 AI. However, I found on internet that some rifles might have a problem using this round. Apparently, problem occurs when round is pushed from magazine by bolt, it does not go properly in chamber and rifle could jam. In order to test rifle to see if it’s suitable, I would need 5 dummy rounds.

So, if some of you reload 30-06 AI, would you please make me 5 dummy rounds; just improved case (in VG shape) and one of 180 gr bullets (I would prefer one with plastic tip) loaded to standard max. length. I’ll reimburse you for your expenses.

If you do not reload this round but know somebody who does, please pass my e-mail to him or PM me, I’ll forward my phone number.

Many thanks,

Onty.

Forgive my ignorance, but do the improved cartridges differ that much in O.A.L. from a standard 30-06?

What part of the improved cartridge makes it a problem in magazine feeding?

Just curious.

OAL is the same, I just wanted to be sure that assembled rounds have max. OAL.

As for feeding problem, apparently, sharper shoulder and bit bigger dia of blown case makes round jumping up more than standard one and bullet hits the area above chamber. The word is that some versions of Mauser 98 are more prone to this than some other rifles. A smith making this conversion on M98 must be aware of this and know how to modify receiver in order to avoid this problem.

Wow! Have you ever been told a lot of stories, or read a lot, from people who didn't have a clue of what they were talking about.

Unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast; nobody in my area has one so I have to rely on internet. I still think it's better to ask stupid questions than do something stupid...

I never have had any feeding issues with improved cartridges myself. Just my $.02 though.

Cartridge, rifle?

I had my Ruger 77(tang saftey) in 22-250 rechambered to an Ackley a few years back. When I received it back from the smith, the shells would feed accross the chamber to the left and jam. Sent it back to the smith and he said he reworked the rails. Feeds great now.....Ken

My sig line shows the one, had a 338 Gaillard on a TRG-S action too. Both cycled flawlessly. There is only 10 thousandths case taper on the 338 Gaillard also, so it's a pretty straight case. 38 degree shoulder too.

I had a 25/06 AI in a TRG-S which cycled fine, but it had other issues.

My buddy has a 700 in 280 AI & it's cycles like a dream also. :D

Umm, if you try to feed and chamber an AI case in an unimproved chamber, you will essentially be resizing the case in your chamber without case-lube and you WILL jam things up.

Well, the whole idea is to see if round is going properly into chamber, without going all the way in (it cannot, of course). On M98 and other control feed rifles, going slowly with bolt, extractor has to engage basically from beginning, even if you put rifle upside down.
