I know similar questions have been asked many many times before but thought I would throw it out to see if there are any new opinions or perspectives

I want to get a 30 06 bolt action (prefer synthetic stock) for more target practice (not bench rest shooting) and I may drag it along to the camp as a backup when hunting (I already have a 3006 semi) and I would like to stay in the $800 range (I have a bit of flexibility) and I prefer to purchase used - except when the dealer sale price is less then CGNers are selling used LOL

Here is what Im considering
#1 Vanguard 2 and getting a B&C stock - which should give me Weatherby's accuracy equivalent of their new Vanguard Range Certified rifle - correct?
#2 Sako A7 (I own Sako 85s and kick myself for selling one chambered in 3006 a year ago)
#3 CZ 550 ( never have owned one but I have a growing attraction)
#4 Winchester Model 70 (own 2 and like them)
#5 Tikka T3 - my only concern is if the mag will restrict me for optimum COAL (have owned 2 of them but prefer the Sako stock)
#6 Remington 700 BDL/CDL - or would I be better to look at a 5r Milspec (I have never been a Remington or Savage guy - but am open)

I assume if I stay with a hinged floor plate system I will be able to seat my bullets out to optimum COAL for whatever rifle I get
I prefer a synthetic stock instead of wood but its not a deal breaker
For those who are temped to ask - Why dont you consider a different caliber since you already have a 3006 - because I want a 3006 in a bolt action and since I have way too much 3006 brass it keeps my costs a lot lower

Any suggestions or input?

Troll the EE or check someone like TradeEx for a used Husqvarna. I assume your $800 does not include optics and mounts? If you want a complete package for $800 then it will be a longer search but doable.

I own a Tikka T3 in 3006 with the synthetic stock. I set mine up for moose, with a Redfield scope.

I'm very happy with the gun. I find it easy to carry around, nice lighweight stock that didn't cause any problems when shooting. There's tons of reviews on it as far as accuracy, no problem there.

The only other thing I can say is to be careful with the 700 ; Remington just recalled millions of them for faulty triggers.

If you never were a Remington guy, not necessarily the best time/gun to become one.

The cz 550, model70, 700 and vanguard are the only ones Ive had experience with on your list but I don't think you'd go wrong with any of them. I hear what you are saying about sticking with the tried and true 30-06 and agree with you.

I picked up a TC venture stainless/camo weathershield from a non sponsor yesterday for 469.00 and with the 75.00 US rebate that adds up to 394.00 for a stainless bolt gun with 5R rifling and a 3 shot MOA guarantee. I'm looking forward to trying out my first TC. The chambering 30-06 of course.

I would have said a Ruger M77 Hawkeye, but it is not on your list. You would be happy with an M70, but I am going to recommend the CZ 550... it is a very nice, accurate rifle...

It's really hard to beat the T3. I have one 30-06 and love it. I also really like the factory synthetic stock.
From my experience, there is ample space in the mag... never an OAL issue for me.

Another option are the CZ models. They are well built and very accurate. Very close to the original Mauser design.

I have a T3 in 270 win and the mag does restrict my COL when using long, High BC tipped bullets. I imagine you would have the same problem with the 30-06.And as for the aforementioned Rem 700 triggers I believe that all the new in stock rifles have been gone through so they are a non issue. Buddy has an 700 SPS in 7mm RM and it shoots just about anything to near MOA. I'm not a Remington guy, but could be converted. Especially after shooting his $450 rifle.

Weatherby Vanguard series 2 is bar none the best rifle in that price range. Great feel, build and accurate. Stay with series 2 for the new trigger which is awesome. Also no need to look for range certified model as they are all shooters.

Except the OP mentionned he prefered to buy a used gun, so a 700 would be a bad idea in that sense.

Great selection of Rifles to choose from.... Hard to go wrong with any of them.

I own a few an have shot most of the options , as far as magazine length goes the Remintons , howa and Ruger hawks have the most, others are restricted by box mags, eg T3, Abolt

Keen to hear which you end up with.

Edit-

Ive never fired a Remington 700 Stainless although I own the Blued shizen finish.. I don't see Why the hate on them, Very fine hunting Rifle, a Stainless in 30-06 would be great for what you want to do.. The trigger I adjusted myself to a reasonable weight, someone with half an idea would get it light as you would need. imo.

don't know too much abut the Recall, my rifle was around 2006-2008 production. I think.

Savage model 116 stainless with synthetic stock.
Consistent less than 1" 3-shot @ 100 yd groups with Nosler Trophy brand factory ammo pushing Nosler 165 grain Accubond bullets.
Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40mm scope on top.
Lots of accuracy and no need to second mortgage your house.

I'm the owner of a Weatherby Vanguard s2 in 30-06 and honestly love it. It sits bone stock with a Bushnell 3-9 in talley rings and will happily shoot moa or or more often less if I do my part. I also own a Savage 16 bear hunter in .300wsm (I know you didn't ask about Savages but) and by the spec sheet they are the same weight but the Weatherby just seems beefier to me, I prefer it of the two.
