I have a 30-06 made by Churchill of England P17 action I think and a very nice job of conversion to a hunting rifle.. It was my go to gun for many years. It started to have difficulty extracting the fired round and it got worse and worse until it got to a point where it is unusable. Is this a head space issue or something else? Any suggestions on the problem and maybe a fix for it. Any gunsmiths in the Vancouver area that might have a fix?

Probably not a headspace issue.

Check the exterior of the case with a magnifying glass. Look for pits or a rough surface, see if the case appears "frosty". These are usually indicators for rust on the surface of the chamber.

It could be high pressure ammo also, or reloads with a too long neck.

~ The cocking cam may need a dab of grease.
~ Clean the chamber well, 0000 steel wool with oil.

Rusty chamber or excessive pressure...

How does the bolt operate with no ammo... easy to lift from the fired position?

Thanks for the responses

The gun has no problem cycling rounds until they are fired. Then it's a bugger to extract the spent case. I will give the chamber a good cleaning. I do shoot reloads and have always used the same load. I will try a lighter load and double check the case length. My current load is 57 grains 4350 behind 165 Sierra Game King it doesn’t show signs of excessive pressure.

Clean the chamber well, then steel wool a round so it is very clean or use a new factory round. If it is hard to extract there should be indications on the case showing a rough/rusty/pitted chamber...

It sounds like rusty chamber. IMHO it might to be to late for steel wool cleaning, the best solution in your case is to drill and tap the fired case (in this chamber) and with threaded rod fastened firmly behind it just lap it a little with 600 grade or finer lapping compound and cordless drill. The other more expensive way would be to setback the barrel one thread or two and cut new chamber but first method should be tried first. GR8's 2c.

It sounds like a broken ejector to me. P17 model 1917's are nototirous for the ejector breaking. The fix is to add a spring to the original they sell modified ejectors at numrich
