30-06 (Garand) reloading question

I am impressed...

..at the very high quality responses to Northman's questions!!

I don't have a Garand,I do have a Norinco M14 copy.I also have a bolt action Browning 30-06 and load for that as heartily as my shoulder will stand. But the semi auto performs much more happily in its pressure range.

As for a full case, overflowing=wrong powder/weight;into the neck, can be settled by tapping the filled case ,then compressing it further when bullet seating.Don't forget though, that compressed powder will push back,so a compressed load may require to be crimped. Not all rifle bullets want or need the potential extra pressure.

Conclusion:As you sain northman, miss with a .50 and you still missed.A .22 will drop a moose.Accuracy is far more important than velocity.

I am a newby here, but have been reloading for 20+ years and so far, have only blown up pumpkins, zucchini and model airplanes and well, some other stuff too.
:)

FWIW, I prefer the minimum strain be exerted on my M1 when punching paper casually. I tend to use the minimum loads.

My "standby" is a load of 46gr of H4895 pushing a 150gr Hornady FMJ. This is a minimum load in both the Lee and Nosler manuals.

the military used IMR4895 EXCLUSIVELY in M2 ball. it is THE powder for the M1. H4895 is a rough equivalent and I find it a tad more consistent and temperature-stable.

In case anyone is still viewing this thread, I hit the range with my loads based on this thread and they seem to work great. I have done up a "shooting" load that's quite light, as well as a "hunting" load with my 165 accubonds getting 2800 fps, but no signs of pressure problems and the rifle certainly not feeling like it's getting banged around. I'd again like to thank everyone who contributed to this thread; without you fellows I may have seriously hurt both myself and my garand.

Hey Northman how did that load using the 165 accubonds work for you out hunting?
I'm looking to use my Garand in the fall for white tails and want to make sure I have a good bullet selected to use. I have a few powders to choose from: Varget, H335, IMR3031 and H4895.
